Bigger gas tanks on M

Post by FPLynah »

Has any one found a higher capacity tank that will fit on the M, under the cockpit seats? I've come close, but it seems that one dimention is always just a little to big. I don't want to go the internal route.

I carry 30 gallons of fuel - I use the two 12 gallon tanks the dealer installed plus the stock 6 gallon tank. I carry this much since I like to cruise on the Chesapeake Bay for up to a week at a time and gas costs alot less at the service station versus at a marine fuel dock.

I added the third tank because I always feel I am running on reserve when I switch to my last tank (since I have no fuel gauges). This is kind of silly when this switch is when half of the fuel is remaining. By adding the 6 gallon tank, I only concentrate on fueling when I use both 12 gallon tanks.

I use the 12 gallon tanks under the seats and place the 6 gallon in front of the pedestal. I cover the footwell in front of the pedestal with a braced piece of plywood.

While we loose the footwell (which was never very impressive anyhow), it makes it alot easier to doze off on the cockpit seat without fearing I will roll over into the footwell :? In a boat designed around tradeoffs, we are happy with this one.

I have 2 12gal tanks, one under each seat. They seem to fit like a glove.

They look like these

How much more fuel do you want to carry?

Depending on the trip we carry the two 12 gal and the etec 6 gal in the dinghy but also carry a smaller honda tank in the dinghy but do on a long trip carry a couple of jerry cans also in the dinghy being towed behind.
Some of our trips last three weeks with no opportunity for refueling and we mainly gunkhole and fish so limited opportunity for sailing help.
