Any Mac owners on Lake Ontario

Post by chapster5 »

Hi
My wife and I are new to sailing and we are looking at getting a trailerable Boat. We are interested in looking at a 26S or even a 26D.

We live about 45mins East of Oshawa so hoping there may be a member on here that is close that would be interested in showing us around their boat, a sail showing how it handles would just be a bonus.

What are peoples thoughts on one of these boats on Lake Ontario??

thanks, Chapster5

I have an :macx: motorsailer, not an S or D, but I have no problem sailing on Lake Ontario with it. It's relatively light and small, so you have to watch the conditions, but they're coastal cruisers, not blue water vessels, so that goes without saying. Loads of folks around here sail boats that size and smaller on the Lake - you just have to be aware of weather and water conditions, and get to know your local sailing area. With a centerboard (unweighted?), you can pull it up and go gunkholing. Trailer it to the Thousand Islands, which is relatively protected. You've got a fair bit of protected water east of Oshawa, like the Bay of Quinte and Rice Lake (though I've never been on them). Good places to learn, I would think.

Don't go out when the wind it kicking up some waves, at least until you've gained confidence, including motoring. Small boats can get knocked around pretty good when conditions are right, especially at inlets, and an offset outboard can spend more time with the prop out of the water than in under the right (or wrong) circumstances. I learned this the hard way years ago, on the other side of the Lake (Braddock Bay inlet). Didn't smash the boat, but got pretty close, with all the submerged pilings just outside of the channel.

Those S and D boats have a pretty good reputation, from what I've seen here.

Thank you for the replies, not sure if we can make the Mad Men Rendevous but that may be a good chance to check out some MacGregors !!

When I started searching trailerable boats the MacGregors came up and I really liked what I seen and read. So now I would like to see one in person. Have found a few on Kijiji, infact may be going to Toronto to look at one.

Just thought posting on here may give me the opportunity to see and talk with someone who is not trying to sell.

thanks, Chapster5
