2007 Factory Trailer Make Over

Post by MAC-A-TAC »

I purchased my new 26M with the factory trailer in 2007 and used it for two seasons for a total of 10 outings, then it sat in my driveway for the next two years while I finished my bachelors. During that two year period I watched the trailing arms, rotors, calibers, tongue, winch post, and winch deteriorate to the point of being unsafe. My only recourse was to replace all of the above items, which is just what I did. The total cost of replacing all these parts was ~ $900.00, I installed the items my self. The following link shows the new parts on the front of the trailer, everything is galvanized up front; in the back the trailing arms and rotors are zinc plated. I decided not to put the brakes back on (lawful in NC) and opted to use idler hubs.

Interesting..............
I'm adding brakes to my D trailer

When the boat was new in '88 they weren't required here either, but are for new trailers (Cal.). I'm not required to add them, but I like the extra stopping power.

I'm native California, but my folks were from Asheville and Shelby, btw.

Best Breezes,
Steve K.

funny how people react different to the same situation, when my wife was upgrading her RN to a bachelors we went out on weekends on the boat twice as much as previously.she found it so much more easy to concentrate and study when out on the water.she felt if it wasnt for the boat she never would have been able to pull it off working full time and school full time.

I would think again about putting those brakes back on. Just going to relate I am glad my brakes worked last month going home from Naragansett Bay RI. Yes I was exceeding the speed limit on the back roads I use. Wife and granddaughter in vehicle behind me. As I rounded a corner a Porche Boxer convertible was taking a left turn right after a sweeping right bend. He stalled out his stick shift car. I drive and tow with a 3/4 ton 4x4 Ram pick-up. I stood hard on the binders, the trailer brakes were in a full smoking squealing song. The anti locks on the truck were on hard enough to make the tires moan in a lower register. The woman passenger in the Porche heard all the commotion behind her, looked threw up her arms and hollared at the driver. I did stop with no mishap. Though the look on her face looking eye level at my bumper was not pretty. He stalled it again two more times trying to get the car off the road. I think also that people who drive standards should practice a bit before driving in traffic.
My take away in all this was thank the powers that be that the trailer brakes worked. Or I would be working longer hours to pay repair bills. Another thing to look at is trailer came with brakes and owner removed them. How would insurance company view that in case of trouble.
Take care Mike

Hello Mike,
Your advice makes good sence. I am less than five miles from our ramp and our max speed is ~ 40mph which factored into my decision to go with the idler hub.
MAC Out.
