Don't forget about a roll of velcro, I found that I use it all the time but that's another thread all together. Also, I bring about 50 feet of 3 or 4mm climbing accessory cord and by the time I'm finished with a week long trip, it's usually all used up. Small diameter kevelar cord is great because it's super strong, doesn't take up much space and can be used in place of failed rigging (no stretch) or sheets in a pinch (wear gloves of course).

I know overkill....18V hitachi toolkit, drill, anglegrinder, torch and 12v charger and all the other bits previously mentioned...this 18v kit actually lives in our tow vehicle and we put it on board when launching. Oh and for the trailor....bearing set x 2 and seals, grease and handcleaner and a sheet to lie on

Marine Tex putty. It hardens even under water. Cover the gouge with it and stick transparent tape on it. We split the centerboard in the Bahamas last year and I am sure it would have exfoliated completely, had we continued sailing with it. We removed it while the boat was in the water and and patched up with Marine Tex. It still holds today. There might be little scratches on the hull that may NOT require immediate attention, but if you have the putty with you and an hour to spare, why not fix them on the spot? Ditto for any loose screws; a daube of Marine tex and you can screw them back into place
The toolbox we have does have a special enclosure for a quart of rum for emergency purposes.

I only saw it mentioned once, but a suitably sized socket as well as the obligatory spare prop, should be in every spare kit. The spare prop is the one you tried first - the one that did'nt work!

My tools:
Channel locks
Crescent wrench
SAE socket set
Needle-nose pliers
#1 Phillips screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
Battery Dremel
cable cutter
plastic prop wrench
multimeter
Crimp tool/wire stripper
I've never needed anything that wasn't in this kit for basic (non-mod) work or minor repairs. I've been carrying this multitool around which works great for 90% of daily needs on the boat: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/st ... tId=397445
It's really handy, especially if you're used to tying and untying knots with a marlinspike.

“WD-40, a vice grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone”. Clint Eastwood
My question for those of you carrying drills and other power tools, when have you used them on a cruise? Lately it feels that all I ever use (besides the tools mentioned in Gran Torino) are the 7/16 and 9/16 wrenches and my Leatherman multitool. Two things that I also carry that I think have not been mentioned are an emergency battery starter that I recharge before each cruise and a small air compressor that I keep in the tow vehicle for the trailer. When I went to the Keys in March I realized that one of the trailer tires was low after 500 miles and I had a very hard time finding a gas station where the air compressor would reach the tandem trailer.
I second the marine-tex and crimple with an assortment of connectors. I also have a set of swimming goggles and shorts in case of unplanned need to get in the dink.

Re: Tool box what to carry?
I carry tools I believe I might need (and a somewhat wide selction of not only tools but repair supplies).
Yes, I carry a power drill. At the Muck-about, I fabricated a temporary repair part for another boat's broken gooseneck boom fitting. I have also rebuilt the captain's seat hinge area while on vacation (needed fiberglass and resin for that one) and needed to redrill the holes. Also good if you need to relocate a fastener on the mast.
The multimeter is very useful. I traced wiring issues where the motor installer ran the wire harness too close to the flywheel (and was able to rebuild the wire harness at dockside). It is also good in diagnosing why a light may not be lit - is it a bad bulb or a corroded connection?
Wrenches, prybars, and large pliers/channellocks: Last week my steering linkage folded up and I needed to straighten out steel parts 10 miles across the Chesapeake Bay from where I was parked, otherwise I could only manage hard right turns.
These are sailboats - seems that constant repair is part of the game. If you only take short trips and have a good way to get a tow home, leave the tools at home.
Now, trying to talk myself into buying another rivet tool.

Re: Tool box what to carry?
Wow! Great the replies!
This thread has really helped. I'm slowly adding to my kit.
This past week Canadian Tire had a sale on tool kits and tools (pliers etc) and I was able to pick up a great set for a good discount. I do have duplicates of screw drivers and the like so they will end up in the tool box.
As I get more experienced I'll add/subtract as needed.
Thanks;
Hugh
