Greece Ionian

Post by ksailing »

Hello!..after a couple of year of having purchased my Mac M and sailing, I still feel there is still so much to learn..I pretty much sailed my Mac in Northern Greece during the summer months but would like to
trail and sail the Ionian this summer:)..would be looking forward to anyone who has experience sailing and X or M in Greece or anywhere actually... but also who would like to share experiences or perhaps new adventures this summer!
Hope this thread has a few interested macsailors:)

Hi,
Together with friends I've chartered a Bavaria 40 for the last week this June. Base is Lefkas and the general idea is to go north to Paxos back south to Kefalonia and then slowly cruise back to Lefkas - all depending on wind and weather of course.

Beginning July I will take my M from Vienna down to the Danube Delta and if weather permits further through the Black Sea to Istanbul where I plan to leave it for the winter. In the years to come then through the Marmara Sea and the Dardanelles to the north of Greece, down to Athens and cross through the channel of Korinth into the Ionian Sea then to Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia....But that is a many years project and we'll see if I can realize this.

I'd be glad to meet uo somewhere along and exchange ideas on that.

Welcome and congratulations! I can see the M handling the Danube competently (You're going to have a blast in the Delta with the mobile keel, if you decide to go that route) But doing the whole Black Sea Coast to the Marmara? That is indeed something! Good luck, fair winds, and keep us posted!

Wow, this is my great dream to do the whole turn from danube and then sailing back to genoa. Living in Switzerland it is easy to get by trailer to the danube... Please show your experiences...

I agree the Black Sea coast is the difficult part but by waiting for a few days of good weather it should be manageable. The real challenge will be to deal with the bureaucracy in Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey – we’ll see.
I have some photos from the first part of the trip – by canoe from Germany to Austria: http://s1096.beta.photobucket.com/user/ ... %20Austria
and a trial run from Vienna to Budapest with the M: http://s1096.beta.photobucket.com/user/ ... 20Budapest

Hi
the ionian.. not got there yet, and sorry about not having written up the last couple of adventures. To start with, check out http://www.ironengineer.com/mac/home/index.htm

there's mods, there's problems, and there's great water and sun!
Just make very sure you have a good water seperator... crucial where you can get 1/2 liter of mud with a fuel fill...
will write more later

That''s great using the Mac as an English river boat and taking it all around Europe too. You missed Syros and Tinos in the Cyclades ;) I've done a lot of day sailing in Corfu in the Ionian, there is an almost daily sea breeze in the NE of the island where it gets close to Albania. I've heard its a nice sail to Paxos and Anti-Paxos too, my cousin makes the trip quite a bit and I have friends who go fishing all around the island. I'd like to have a Mac over there some day but its complicated if you don't buy it in the EC. Maybe some day, but for now I just use my Mac around Florida.
