So I've got the CA desert sun and an outdoor M problem, and I'm not the guy whose going to repaint, re-gelcoat, or spend all day buffing and waxing my boat. It's just not going to happen.

I tried to convince the factory to do a hull for me with no black gelcoat, but Roger wouldn't do it. Said the Windows wouldn't look right. I really dis-liked the bandit stripe look, and actually avoided the boat for a while because of it. I guess the 80's just weren't my decade. I personally like the look of the few all-white hulls I've seen, and intend to eventually get rid of the bandit stripes.

Anyway, I've done nothing since stock except let my roller furler and gin pole scratch them up, so of course my boat looks like it's got more miles on it than a hull's Angel's girlfriend.

Unless the Penetrol is actually going to damage the boat, or prevent me from eventually eliminating the bandit stripes, it sounds like the right kind of solution for me.

My criteria are:

1) Wipes on, Wipes off. Mr. Miyagi does all of my maintenance.
2) Looks better than current.

Steve, where can I get it? Anybody else know of something I can get in So Cal that fits that bill?

Penetrol is no way to protect Gelcoat,
Okay Dave,

Problem is (and I too have a lot of experience with gel coat, fiberglass etc)
1. Don't have time/energy to do another boat right now (or$$$ for that matter)
2. South coast EPA of California is a true b##ch these days. You have to remember I live where you can have your property confiscated for killing a Kangaroo rat. Can't just refinish a boat in the back yard anymore (without risk, anyway).

The good thing about Penetrol is that it is not problematic if/when I do decide to do it right at some point in the future.

As far as not lasting goes, you are correct in that you can't just do it once and expect the finish to stay looking great from that point on. However, neither can you go to all the work of refinishing and expect the new gel coat to stay looking new either. In fact, I'm sure you know that gel coat does take a lot of work to keep it looking new, particularly when it is out in intense sunlight constantly.

All I was saying is that Penetrol is an easy way to make the boat look reasonably good and it will put some oils back into the gel coat. And with re-use over time it actually improves how the boat looks.
Polyglow is a different story entirely. Just go get some mop and shine as it's about the same thing. (I'll probably get some crap for that comment). But I would never use any of those acrylic coatings. Ever seen a boat where that stuff is flaking off :?:

Best Breezes.

Matt,

As I said, you can't get it in California anymore (along with a whole lot of other stuff) And no, you won't find anything like it here.

What CA. desert are you in? I'm in Hesperia. I'm going to Mead next Thursday. They had it in Home Depot in Henderson.
See where I'm going with this? PM me if you like.

Oh! and Matt, I saw a picture of an X boat that had been totally refinished white.
It looked different, but great :!:

This was actually the plan for my D boat, if I ever got around to it. Remove waterline and boot stripe completely an just have a small tri-color pin stripe right where the bottom of the boot stripe is now. Black-gray-silver stripe with a total with of about a half inch. And forget the waterline stripe.... what good is it?

Did my Catalina 22 like this and it looked cool.

Dudes, most of your state is a desert, btw. You just nick all of Mexicos water to make it look green

Mod note....no politics on Board please....

OP....sorry, my bad

I took a tax deductible business trip to confirm that Matt is in the Cardiff desert and drank is beer while checking his CARB compliance too.

I called a mobile RV/Boat detail guy last night and he said $15/ft to clean the topside and sides, all railings, and polyglow the entire boat...... I'll try to finish the boat this weekend and see what "my method" looks like before I go spending my gas/beer money!!

Heh when enquired about color, I was told I could have it any I wished (2011) but I had plans for a two tone color plan, so the white hull worked. I like the stripes. Mine are faded. I tried baby oil, but penetrol is probably better. I don't like wax because of build up and it just don't seem to last. I'll try the penetrol. regelcoating the boat is an insane project that requires time and experience in order not to have the job look like a disaster. Every grlcoat thing I touch turns out to be more of a pita then I thought it would be. A wipe on goop that won't affect future adhesion of all the mods I want to make sounds great to me.

Its 2013 and I am trying to be the kinder gentler Divecoz : ) So I will commit to this much . It looks clean but a little stripped down.. IF.... your my age you remember when Ford made a Galaxy... a Galaxy 500 and a Galaxy 500 XL each unit had a bit more Pizazz than the preceding unit.. Chevy and Chrysler did it as well. Chevy was Biscayne.. Impala.. Impala SS

Dive,

After reading that post twice, I have no idea what you are talking about :? :D

I am tired of trying to wax, or buff, or coax the stripes into being shiny, so I am now going to paint them black.

I am a 63 year old who remembers the Galaxy's quite well. In 1966 I was in the back seat of a shiny red convertible one, in which the hood flew open when the car was doing about forty MPH. Noisy and scary :D

Ray

P.S. You left out the Bel Air from Chevy's line.
