BF-50 engine hesitating

Post by DaveC426913 »

I have only myself to blame. I'm pretty sure I haven't been keeping up proper maintenance on my BF-50.

It's been fine all spring but when I pushed it up to 11 knots, it started hesitating, and did not stop (hesitating, that is). No matter what speed, or anything else I tried, including switching tanks, it would lose power in fits and starts - as if one of the cylinders were dropping out. Never slowed or sped up for longer than a second at a time. I could see the tachometer ticking up and down, and feel the boat lurching slightly. Did it all the way back to the dock.

The hesitation is oddly consistent, never getting better or worse, not changing with throttle, and never dying, even in idle.

I'll check the plugs, the filter, the oil level. Aaaaaand it could be the last year's gas too. :(

But any other suggestions, things I should check while I'm under the hood?

Get rid of last years gas by dumping it in your car tank, and take it out at full throttle for awhile. Then try some SeaFoam to help clean things up. If anything is clogged or sticky, SeaFoam might help a bit.

Woot! I wonder what she could do sans 500 lbs of gear, sails and canvas enclosure!

It was the plugs.

Replacing them has made the problem go away, even though there doesn't seem to be any problem with the originals. They look clean and well-gapped (to my virgin eyes at least).

I, um, had a similar issue this year. when I inspected my plugs, I wasn't real careful reinstalling the plug wires. #1 was loose. Ran like a dog on 2/3 cyliners, but it still ran.

Could that be easily double checked by removing one of the plug wires while the engine is running? The engine would either stall or run awful. If the same happened for each plug, then you would know it was something else. I don't think removing a spark plug wire for several seconds would damage anything?

It could be that your gas bulb is collapsing. I had that happen to me and when I replaced the bulb all was well.

Thanks for the update. Now I'm thinking I should replace mine, too. Not that the engine is running rough, but just because I haven't done it since I got the boat, and I like to do things like that so I know when and how it was done.

As an interesting aside on plugs for that engine, my local Honda large OB dealer told me just last week to be sure to use NGK plugs, and that the Denso (weren't they called 'Nippondenso' for, like, forever?) plugs can cause all sorts of erratic behavior. Both brands are in the manual, DR7EA (NGK) and X22ESR-U (Denso). I don't know if he was just trying to sell me plugs (I was there for that odd-ball fuel filter), or if this was one of those urban legend things that everyone knows but no one can prove, or it it's for real, but I thought enough of it to write it down, and this seems like a good place to bring it up. So here it is. :|

Dave,
So what brand name of plugs did you replace? Denso? What are the new ones? NGK?
