Boat lift and insurance

Post by Champguy »

Hello all,

So the 4th of July started out with loading my family on the boat :macm: , which was on my 4000# cantilever boat lift. As we were lowering it into the water, the lift legs collapsed on one side leaving us hanging on the lift at a very odd angle. We were able to power off of the lift without doing any damage to the boat, but the lift needs repairs.

When I went shopping for new lifts, I learned a few things:

1) My craigslist lift I bought was probably not a 4000# lift, but a 3000# or 2500#. :x

2) Vertical lifts work better than cantilever lifts. 14 out of 18 lifts at our yacht club are Shore Station vertical lifts. Mine was 1 of 2 cantilever lifts. My bad, I should have done more research.

3) New lifts are really expensive!

So my question are:

What size boat lift do you use?

Where can you get lift insurance? My current company, Progressive, doesn't insure lifts. I would be willing to change boat insurance company's, but not auto/home.

Anything else I need to know? I may buy a 6000# Shore Station today. It sounds like overkill to me, but the admiral is happy on the 6000# lift we are on temporarily.... and she may kill me if I'm responsible for a repeat of the 4th of July. :?

Thanks folks.

Take care,

Aaron

Do you have a trailer?

It might be a good idea to put your boat on a trailer, load it as if heading out and pull it to a roadside scale to find the true weight. The advertised weight of these boats is bare hull only. With an outboard, water, fuel, belongings and people you could be over 4,000lbs in a blink.

Not too many boat lifts here so no specific knowledge on that subject. Happy to hear there were no injuries or boat damage.

Willy,

Thanks. I do have a trailer and I am going to weigh it when it comes out this fall.

I figure about 4,000# loaded also. I purchased the new 6000# vertical lift and had it installed Friday.

The insurance quote for the lift was 3/$100. I will have $8000 in this lift. It's alot of money to sink to the bottom of the lake.

State Farm insures my boat lift under the house policy.. I have a 14,000 - 4 post verticle lift. 2 Direct Drive 220 VAC Motors.. Both are Perminately Sealed Units.. *******
No lifts are not cheap but then again, I gave IIRC , only about $12000 for the lift installed with 6 - 8" post and a 6 ' x 16 ' dock.. ALL SS Hardware Blablabla..
I added as well 85' of seawall, back fill, sod ( 20'x 85' 4 feet deep) actually IMHO a lot of product and labor for $25K
Never Ever Under Rate Your Lift.. a light weight lift is worth almost nothing to the next guy .. He there by , offers you next to nothing for it and its life time is shorten. Its not really asset when selling with the house etc etc. My 14K-LB. lift, will lift a Very Large Power Boat and with a bunk mod, a sizeable sailboat..
My 23' Striker WA Cuddy with SS Hard Top , T Top and 200 HP OB and 100 Gal. Gas weighs in at about 5K LB's..
