Tiny Jump box
Tiny Jump box
So, i was shopping jump boxes (single battery setup for the time being) and ran into this thing called "powerall" on amazon. Its a tiny little usb backup battery, but it comes with a jumper cable attachment. Its about the size of my hand 1" thick. Figured even if it wasnt a good jump box, it would give me emergency phone charging.
Turns out it jumps the boat just fine. Probably weighs a pound and takes up zero space. Wont jump the engine through my cables that need replacing, but directly to engine, just like it was on a full battery.
Just a thought.. Its about $80 and a real space saver over a conventional jump box. Wonder if its just a bunch of capacitors, as it isnt heavy enough to be a big battery.
Not intended as an advertisement... Just a neat product, that so far, works.

Re: Tiny Jump box
I just replaced my jumper box because my old ten year old unit died.
This thing is interesting. Its small, about the size of a tissue box. Reviews are all positive and claim it really works. $80 bucks isn't bad, but $60 shipping is. I have prime and not for the shipping I would buy one.

Comes from China (what doesn't?), but not by air. Several varieties, for example:RobertB wrote:I found it on Amazon, with PRIME shipping - stated "usually ships in 1-2 months" - WHAT is this months thing?

They usually claim have about 12AH capacity, in that zone.

That might be a different type thing. It might be one of those through the cigarette lighter things. This one has clamps.Max Entropy wrote:Comes from China (what doesn't?), but not by air. Re: Tiny Jump box
If you search http://www.Alibaba.com for "usb jump starter" it will bring up a list of stuff, a number of which look just like the Powerall thing, though maybe coloured differently and with various kinds of connectivity.island808 wrote:That might be a different type thing. Yea, I buy some cheap junk from china also. Takes a month, but fifty cents for an iPhone USB lightning cable is worth the wait.
So how much does that thing weigh? Would it power your ipad for a while?

Re: Tiny Jump box
it took some searching but this looks like the "official" site.
http://thepowerall.com/home.html
It lists specs.... perhaps someone who is knowledgeable can interpret the capacity rating.
I'm pretty intrigued. Please, discuss amongst yourselves.

Re: Tiny Jump box
They say the capacity is 12000mAh, which is 12 Amps for an hour, but they don't say at what voltage. To charge it is 3 hours @ 1 Amp and 15 Volts, which gives an energy capacity of 3 * 1 * 15 = 45 Watt hours, so to discharge at 12 Volts and 200 Amps (~ jump start current) it would be good for 45/(12*200) hours =0.1875 hours, or 1.125 minutes. So if they say it will jump start your car 20 times, the car will hopefully start in less than (1.125 / 20) minutes, or 3 + seconds. Of course, your mileage may vary.paul I wrote:it took some searching but this looks like the "official" site.

Re: Tiny Jump box
Hey Nick!
I can't see that you would get that capacity in real life, even with a warmed-up engine. They say you'll get 20 starts out of it???
The battery's ability to deliver that amperage would diminish (along with its voltage) after each start, even with a recovery pause between them. I don't know what particular type of battery technology this product uses, but I would be surprised (it would be a pleasant surprise, though, and I have been surprised in the past) if it could deliver a V8 start on a (southern) Canadian winter morning with conventional oil. Surprise me, somebody.
I need to know more!
Battery technology has moved ahead in recent years thanks to hybrid cars, phones, and laptop and portable devices (low internal resistance, also efficient starters, cylinder compression relief on startup, etc). This is likely a spinoff product from some of those technologies.
ps. you slipped a decimal point over, =0.01875 hrs, but recovered it in the minutes conversion- nice recovery!

Re: Tiny Jump box
I do not think this item is anything high tech - just a portable lithium ion battery with a bunch of interface cords. I have a smaller one to charge my phone. I also do not believe this will be very useful starting engines unless they are very easy starting - such as the ETEC. That being said, I would still possibly buy one if price and shipping were reasonable.
