Price for sail repair upgrade??

Post by kadet »

My 5 year old :macm: Genoa is looking a bit sad, white UV stripe is showing the dirt badly from sitting under tarp on boat and I cannot get it clean. Cloth and stitching is all good and is the heavier weight kelly hanson one. I am also sick of getting a cricked neck trying to look under the thing when sailing in busy areas so for safety reasons I want a window in the foot of the thing. 8)

I have got a quote from a local sailmaker for $450 to remove the old UV stripe and replace it with a black one and install a window in the foot of the genny.

Having never had work like this done before, only ever purchased new sails, is this reasonable?

Thanks
PK

I just got a brand new loose footed main and RF Genoa with UV stripe from JudyB for $1500--I think the Genoa was about $800. So I'd go that route and keep your current genny as a backup rather than putting money into it.

In my opinion, sail repair beyond what you can do with tape and a needle & thread yourself isn't worth the money compared to new.

Have you tried taking the headsail out of the furler and washing it in a bathtub?
I agree with mastreb, it seems like a lot of money to still end up with a 5 year old sail.
we changed ourselves the sacrificial cover with the sailrite kit:
so taking into account labor plus material for the window, your quote sounds fair. Could you remove the old one yourself and save some on labor?

Problem is Judy B and most other inexpensive sailmakers in the states don't ship to OZ

Prices here are often double the prices in the states and we are 1/2 the distance to Asia where most things are made anyway, we get ripped on so many things here for no apparent reason that an inquiry has been launched by the toothless government agency the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission.

I have asked for a quote for a new sail but don't expect it to come in at anything like $800. As I said the Genoa is in good condition always stored out of the sun, it is just soiled, the tarp I store the boat under acts like a sieve and has deposited very fine soot that has worked it's way deep into the white fabric of the UV stripe.

After some searching I found Peak Sails North America have an Australian office but stories abound of this company taking money and not delivering so:?:

Thanks for the help will just have to see which way I go.

At least the admiral said I could have a new sail for my x'mas present :)

Send it to Sail Care. (if they will ship??)

It will look like new when you get it back.
(I've sent a half dozen sails there for cleaning)

Don't know if they deal with folks outside U.S. but thought they do. Must be info on the web site.

Look for a Hyde dealer. They're an old Hongkong loft that now makes in the Philippines and has dealers world wide.

I live in Norway, and used to face the same problem every once in a while. Lots of shops in the US does not ship international.

But I found a shipping agency With a mailbox service in US. I now order like every other american Citizen, goods are sent to my mailbox in NJ, and the shipping agency send my goods from NJ to Norway for a reasonable cost. I can choose between sea or air, heavy stuff is expensible to ship by air so i prefer sea quite often.

I would be surprised if no similar service is available to Australia?
