Beene,
You are absolutely right. Snow and ice will build up. Your setup certainly provides better sleep at night.
So far, the build up hasn't caused me any issues. Your solution is better, but I'm simply too lazy to do that much work and it hasn't been a problem in the past 5 years. We get a lot of snow also.

Re: Covering boat for the Long Winter
Does anyone leave their masts up over the winter and cover the boat that way? I keep mine at a marina on the trailer so no need to step the mast to get to the ramp. Seems like most store the boat with the mast down. Any issues leaving it up for the winter? I'm optimistically hoping to take the boat out a few more times throughout the winter

Re: Covering boat for the Long Winter
I see no reason why you can't leave the mast up. It just happens to make a nice tent for a tarp.
The main reason I tarp the boat is to keep the snow and sun off. Water will find it's way into a crack, freeze and create leaks. But if freezing wasn't an issue, I might not tarp it at all. Well, it does keep the UV rays off the fiberglass, but if there were a chance to take the boat out, I'd have it ready to launch all winter long.
