Went Sailing Yesterday
I mentioned in another topic that we were going out on Saturday and one of the guys back East asked that we post the pictures because they were all frozen in with ice and could use a little encouragement.
I never even thought about how challenging that might be sitting in the ice waiting for spring and I felt bad about it so I wanted to cheer up the guys back East and post the pictures as requested. We did indeed go sailing on Saturday but did not make our destination of Dana Point Harbor for reasons that will be obvious in the pictures.
I hope you folks back East warm up soon.

Great clip Boat
At least They fire across Your bow
DL....sorry to hear about the weather up there...I was stationed at Waukegan ( Navy ) and saw the lake frozen...even the waves
Thats when I decided to transfer to the Phillipines
We had ice three days ago ...today was 75...spent the day putting l.e.d. lights on the spreader bars and mast head and in general " piddaling" around. Ron.
Dauntless.

Re: Went Sailing Yesterday
Last time I went past Camp Pendleton, one of the LCAC air-cushion landing crafts waited on their "boat ramp" for a half-hour until we'd sailed past the exclusion zone.
Another time we were out there when this almost completely submerged amphibious armored personnel carrier when swimming by with a RIB playing tender. Turns out it's a prototype of a machine that won't be in service until next year.
Seems like its always a show going past (or especially through) the exclusion zone. We've been turned around in the south bay of San Diego near the amphib base by some really nice sailors with a 50 caliber chain gun mounted on the front of their RIB.
The coolest thing to watch is the V-22 Ospreys on maneuvers, especially if you're lucky enough to see one landing or taking off at Pendleton or Miramar. Those things are low, loud, and scary looking with those two giant rotating props. Much like a Mac they're about half good at being a helicopter and half good at being a plane, and useful where you need both.
Having been in the Navy, none of this bothers me but I guess it would be really spooky if you didn't know what was going on (and how often the military has to shoo looky-loos away).

Re: Went Sailing Yesterday
Hey guys! I must make a correction - the movie picture was not takes on Saturday, we were out on FRIDAY!! I lost a day somewhere when I was writing up the post. Maybe one of you guys with military knowledge can look up US Naval Operations for Friday February 14th and tell me what was going on. Like Matt said, it's always a show up there.
Hi Obelix!
I did not mention that on that leg where we hauled up the sails and pointed straight out to sea they did send a cobra chopper out to look us over - he came bearing down right at us at strafing speed, (I wish I got a picture) and the Ospry guys were there too but they were working the shoreline so I figured we were cool. As mastreb said - if your under sail you can easily get past the restricted zone and the huge kelp bed off San Clemente if you stay real close about 1/2 mile off shore - and that can work sometimes also when motoring but not that day!
Mathew!!!
We were just eating dinner at 333 Pacific watching the sun go down when the wife corrected me! I said "Gee, no fog today like yesterday!" And she said: "You dummy! We were not in the fog yesterday! That was FRIDAY!"
So I snapped a picture over my daughters head of the sun at our table:

As you well know - the temp here today even at this late hour must be in the high 60's? (Maybe the low 70's?)
I hope you guys back East get some warm stuff soon.

But while you were sailing, we were exploring the ice caves that formed on the lake here.

BTW- thanks for the video. I like that it told a story that went along with it.

Me too!

But thanks for the vid. I think it's time to put Captain Ron on again, to remind myself yet again that there is such a thing as warm weather and boating.

Re: Went Sailing Yesterday
That's right guys! Don't loose hope! The warm weather will be back soon!
I can't go sailing anymore for over a month myself but it's not because of the weather - it's cuz "Big Urban Light Bus Assault Vehicle-Saurus, (aka: Bulbasor), is going in today for body work repairs to deal with rust around the windshield.
I won't have a tow vehicle for three weeks.
I will try to find something to cheer you guys up.

Re: Went Sailing Yesterday
OK, that was funny. I was expecting the sound track to change to "Ride of the Valkyries" when the CH-47 helos came bearing down on you.
Well done.
Well done.

Re: Went Sailing Yesterday
Reminds me of my first sail in my Mac25. I was tacking against the wind and current and veered past the marker boundaries for Sunny Point terminal (The MASSIVE military ammunition port down here in Wilmington NC)
I got to see the highspeed inflatables too...except they were coming to ask me to drop my sails and motor out of the restricted area.
By the way, I loved seeing under the boat while under sail, that was a neat angle!
