Insulating the stainless steering wheel is indeed a great idea. Shortly after we got our boat I visited the Boatleather booth at the Seattle Boat Show, and walked away with a kit for putting a leather cover on our wheel. It looks as good as new after 10 years of use and exposure to the elements. It's much more comfortable to grip, and definitely feels warmer while cruising our northern waters.

I went to the auto parts place and paid 7 or 8 dollars for a steering wheel cover. Drilled holes in it to drain and its been good for 15 years.
