new owner, a few questions.
new owner, a few questions.
I recently picked up a 1991 26S.
It's in ok shape and and really only need some cosmetic TLC.
It looks like the PO, went to the bluewateryachts.com and just ordered every upgrade the offer.
It has the traveler installed, boom vang, sale lugs, all lines routed to the cockpit, and it has the single line reefing kit installed.
My question regards the single line reefing kit, Im trying to find a PDF or some documentation on it, but I don't know what brand it is or if it has a specific name..
Any help would be great.
Thanks!

I just can't find the documentation for it.
I emailed bwyachts as well, never got a reply.

Hmm. I've got that on my boat. Maybe I can take some pics tomorrow how it works. Not really complicated.

I have the same single line reef kit on mine too and can help Russ answer your questions.

Here's a member's pictorial of how they run their single line reefing
http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner ... ng-22.html
If it's not enough info PM Sumner he's always glad to help
If you still need help, keep asking
Someone always rises to the occasion, that's why we all love this forum. Chances are someone will make a diagram for you. I don't have single line reefing so I don't want to lead you astray with how "I" think it should be rigged.
Don't forget to search the forum, chances are the answer is there. That's how I found the link to Sumner's page.
Enjoy your new boat, mine was nearly stock and there's so much to do.

Yea those pictures don't do much good, an actual diagram would be ideal.. such a thing exists right?
I mean when a customer buys this kit do they just get a receipt with "good luck" written on it?
Is this kit produced or built by a company? Or did it just come into existence from a unknown creator?
... wait a sec.... did Ikea make this?!

Re: new owner, a few questions.
OK Wingnutt,
Bear with me here, I made a simple diagram and if it doesn't help keep asking I'm sure someone else can explain better.
Here's the diagram:

Single reef line(Green) is attached at A then through the reef point B to a cheek block on the boom C (A and C should be on opposite sides of the boom) forward along the boom through fairlead or pad eye D to a cheek block E then through reef point F down to a cleat at G(E and G should be on opposite sides of the boom). G can be a block if you have all your lines led aft to the cockpit.
To reef you turn into the wind to de-power the main then loosen your mainsail halyard and pull your Single Reef Line, this pulls your reef point down to the boom. Your reef line running up the sail and through the reef points down to blocks on opposing sides captures the loose sail as you reef( you can still secure your reef at the ties to keep things shipshape). Cleat off your reef line, re-tension the main halyard and cleat it off. Turn off the wind and continue sailing with a neat and handy reef.
The bonus is in high winds you don't have to grab the end of the boom with your main halyard slack to reef while your main luffs or worse yet catches wind and possibly throws you overboard. With single line reefing you go to the mast and reef where there is plenty to hang on to. With lines led aft you can reef from the safety and comfort of the cockpit.
I hope this helps and if anyone wants to add anything or correct me please do, you won't hurt my feelings
.
Sumner has air blocks tied to the reefing points for super smooth reefing(it must be a dream).
Every time we leave the dock reefed due to weather reports I've shaken out the reef in half an hour because we didn't actually need it. Easier to reef early and shake it out, than to try to reef in high winds.
Wishing you many happy cruises,
Willy

Re: new owner, a few questions.
I have been trying to figure out how to rig the reefing where all the setup is installed on the boom to facilitate easy rigging. It is really hard getting around the need for the forward line mounted on the mast.

Here is a cheek block that's also a snatch block...put this block on your mast(at G) and everything else on the boom. Attach the boom, flip the snatch block over the reefing line and voila, RIGGED.

If your single line reefing is run to the cockpit, put a loop in your reef line where it hits the deck at the mast base after the turning block(H...snatch block again) then put a snap-shackle(I) on the line that leads to the rope clutch(J) and cockpit. This should allow you to take in about 8ft of line to reef.

Re: new owner, a few questions.
I have the BWY single line reefing on my boat, Philip. It reefs from the rear of the boom, so it never is a problem rigging, or derigging for trailering. I'll show you how it works. I have never had a problem with it either under way, or have to. Remind me to show you how to heave to. I forgot on Sunday.
