Yeah, I was sure, being from Ottawa, that you were bilingue taime1, and it referred to what Kevin wrote, without the apostrophe. But it was not so.

This has been one of the most informative threads yet (not to downplay the value of any other threads here). And it shows the disparity between what an author intends, and what the reader perceives.

Re: Aliases
Well here's our Alia/Boat name explained,
My Admiral's family has a tradition of making boat names out of the letters of family first names.
Since we were plannning/saving for an
which is a black and white boat, we came up with a name from the available letters that sounds like Whiskey jack, which is actually mostly grey(Grey Jay) but has a White head with black streak through the eye and on top like the 'coon strip on an
We've had our boat mistakenly called WhiskeyJack several times, but it doesn't bother us
For me the cool thing is we had a pic of an
on the fridge with "Whipsyjac" artfully added to the bow for 2 years before we actually bought her.
Great thread, thank you.

Re: Aliases
Funny thing is, I'm French. I am bilingual, but English is my second language, my kids don't even speak English yet (they will). For whatever reason, the French meaning in taime1 was never really intended, but I do like it.seahouse wrote:Yeah, I was sure, being from Ottawa, that you were bilingue taime1, and it referred to what Kevin wrote, without the apostrophe. I agree that this is a most interestint thread.

Re: Aliases
My username isn't particularly clever. I was in the Navy for six years as a young man and got used to syllabic abbreviations that are used there instead of acronyms. My name is Matthew Strebe, so mastreb is just a pronounceable abbreviation of the first syllable of my first and last names. Actually this is the only forum I use it on--its more normal for me to use mstrebe on forums. I don't remember why I didn't to that here.
Our boat name is a bit more interesting: "Luna Sea" is actually named after our three children, kira LU, NAthan, and SEAnna. It also predates RobertB's appearance on the forum by about two weeks

Thanks Boat for pointing that out. But consider, since I am still sailing mine, the Blue one has more staying power

My first love is riding, and I've been doing that for 44 of my 50 years on this planet. I'm a traveler by nature it seems, so to discover sailing a few years ago fits right in

Speaking a little French I immediately thought of Je t'aime ( I Love you) and thought it was derivated from that in a contraction but I have learned something more about 'La Belle Langue Francaise'

Really great thread..... loved reading the posts of everyone.
I spent 17 plus years working in Saudi Arabia (1978 to 1995 - Ryiadh and then Al Khorbar right before the Gulf War started)..... and was a nomad or bedouin in the US until I finally settled in Florida 13 years ago.

Re: Aliases
I noticed you are out of Palma Sola Bay in Bradenton. Couldn't resist a short "sea story" about a day I spent in your "neck of the woods". In spring 2012, I trailered American Spirit over to Gulfport for a run down the coast to Venice. Bad weather kept us on the ICW all week the whole way. On return trip on the last day we led a "fleet' of sailboats through the Anna Marie bridge into the southern part of Tampa Bay. Trouble was the wind was at 20 knots out of the northwest and was driving 6-8 ft seas right into the bay. As we plodded on through the channel from the bridge north, I started to get a sinking feeling this was not going to be a routine crossing to the other side. Sure enough; after watching what the ever increasing waves were doing to the boat, I decided not to take my wife out in that mess, and I was still taking the waves on the bow. I had to eventually face doing some time with the waves on the beam or close to it, so I turned around and headed for the ramp on the causeway just west of the bridge. The waters there were a little exposed and rough, but not like out in the bay. Long story, shortened. got a ride to Gulfport, brought truck and trailer back and recovered the boat. Not much opportunity for picture taking, but when it was all over, you could tell from the mess below, that we had had an "adventure". Welcome to Florida, by the way. Have many good memories sailing our Hobie off Anna Marie and in Sarasota Bay. Good place to settle.I finally settled in Florida 13 years ago
