Gate valve change in water?

Post by reggleed »

I have a 26M 2006 and the gate valve has seized. Is it possible to change the gate valve whilst still in the water? I have bought a new one from Valterra but it all plastic. Will that be ok?

It would require you getting wet. Seems so much easier to just put it back on the trailer.

You have to use 3M 5200 sealant between the gate valve and the hull, and you won't be able to get it to seal correctly wet.

If you bought an exact replacement, the actual valve comes in 3 pieces IIRC. A mounting flange, the valve body and a cover plate. The whole thing is held together via the compression provided by the 4 mounting screws and the seal between the valve and the plates uses a gasket or o-ring . You might be able to back out the screws, change just the valve and cover plate and use the old mounting flange which you can leave left in place with seal undisturbed. And i'm working from memory here... which is never a good idea in my case....

My gate valve was seized when I boat the boat but some silicon spray lube worked to get it moving freely again, of course it was on the trailer at the time.
