MacGregor 26M Boat Moulds
On searching the Internet here in Australia on our local For Sale web site I found MacGregor moulds for sale, M model I think.
I was under the opinion they where only built in the states. Unless someone come into something here in Australia that we where not told about.
And I only found the Ad, I am not selling them.
Here is the link to the Advertisement.
Just thought you guys back in the states would find this a bit of a find.

That's a nice looking boat.
Or a nice boat building factory.....before the copyright lawsuit begins.kadet wrote: 500 for the molds..... all you need is another 40k and you will have a 20k boat.

Yes, I'd imagine that Laura Sharp could be very interested in knowing what happens to those molds.

Re: MacGregor 26M Boat Moulds
Well, there's actually no copyright issue as long as they don't use the "MacGregor" name. The only possible issue would be violation of a design patent, had one been filed before production began. As physical property, the molds are completely transferrable and the only legal remedy to stop production would be patent infringement. A quick search of the USPTO on inventor named Roger MacGregor shows no issued patents after 1976.
How the heck did they wind up in Australia?
Also, by my quick math, it would cost right about $3000 in materials to do a 5-layer full mould of a MacGregor in E-Glass and epoxy. (5-layers is what the factory did, increased in strength critical areas which would be very difficult and dangerous to guess at).

Re: MacGregor 26M Boat Moulds
after looking at the ad pictures- sure dont look like a home job- but those molds have not seen a lot of use by the looks of them- no overspray- resin dribbles etc etc.
looks like a project started, and then given up on- death in the family???!!??

Geez that's odd. Murbah is a country town of 8500 population with no boat builders, as seen in the second half of my Tweed river vid:

I'v emailed him to ask about the moulds

Re: MacGregor 26M Boat Moulds
If they are the Mach 28 moulds there is no issue in Australia we are not subject to US Law so any patents etc would have to have been registered here as well as the US to have any recognition there is no such thing as an international patent and you must register in each country you want to enforce the patent in.
Also there was enough changes made to make it a different boat as the
like the Imexus 28.
Also unless Macgregor has registered the Business Name here and got an ABN there is nothing stopping anyone making the Macgregor 28 here, you just would be not able to export them to the US. And that would be like selling snow to Canadians
Burger King here is called Hungry Jacks because there was already an Australian register business called Burger King..
http://www.hungryjacks.com.au/
USA Law is only enforceable in the USA and there is big old world outside

Re: MacGregor 26M Boat Moulds
Yeah okay, I get it now, they are not Macgregor moulds but the Mackman 28
Fella says:
"As far as I am aware they produced some boats unsure of amount but I was told they were going to be transported to Thailand for production in the future. There was a finished boat but it has gone if you are interested I can run a tape and confirm length or you are more than welcome to come and have a look."

Re: MacGregor 26M Boat Moulds
Nothing new here.
Roger invented the Swing Keel. It got copied.
Roger invented the Pop Top. It got copied
Roger invented the water ballast. It got copied.
Roger did not get any royalties from his "so called" *competitors for ANY of the many things he invented.
Roger comes up with so many new and good ideas that everyone else can't keep up and they all resort to just copying him so I assume he is pretty used to it by now.
The real question is: What neat new thing is Roger going to come up with NEXT?
(*there really is no legitimate competitor, never has been)

Re: MacGregor 26M Boat Moulds
Actually if you go into the history of things, Rodger did all that in the US not the rest of the world he actually "borrowed" other peoples ideas and applied them to his own boats.BOAT wrote:Nothing new here.

Roger copied the Swing Keel. It was invented in the late 1700s by the British Navy and has been on trailer sailers since the 1950s and the German Jollenkreuzers that originated in the 1920s had a swing keel of sort.
Roger copied the Pop Top. Hatleys in the 50s had 'em, first boat Rodger made was not until 1965
Roger invented the water ballast. Sorry, no again. Was in Europe again first one was the the German Dehler 25 1984 Rodgers D came out in 1985
I believe Rodger did say he invented all that on his original website but he took a hammering on other boat forums so it got changed to "used innovations" as he was an early adopter but not the inventor... He was the Henry Ford of Trailer Boat building though with mass production and marketing

Re: MacGregor 26M Boat Moulds
In inventor is someone who can actually PRODUCE what he talks about and make it available to others. No one was interested in ANY of these ideas until Roger was able to actually PRODUCE the items and make money on it. This is the way it works in the US. Diamler may have invented a car, but Henry Ford made the car a REALITY.
Without the DOERS in the world all the great ideas just end up as passing play toys for rich people and eventually fade away into nothing. There is a LOT of that out there. There are thousands of great ideas for mouse traps but only a few that ACTUALLY WORK.
In the US it's not an invention if it does not work.
