Confused about AC

Post by Dragos Filimon »

I cannot figure it out. How many BTU's should I install on A 2002 26X ? I am tempted to go with a small unit - like 5000-6000 BTUs. Is it enough?

That's all you will need. I've used a 5000 btu unit for over 10 years on 2001 X and it will put a chill in the cabin. It gets cold enough to stop the mosquitoes from flying. Best of luck.

5,000 BTU AC with the "Billy Box" & rear window is the most awesome system for an X. Looks factory and the extra seating is in constant use either for a "window bar" or to sit on . Easy to step over like an M.

Thank you very much! That answers my questions. Another month or so and it will be done.

I want to get the water intake for AC below the ice chest, between the centerboard and water tank. (the X in the drawing). I want to be sure there is nothing between the inside and outside walls (I do not want to go through the water ballast). Has anyone done this before?

Wait A minute!!
Put down the drill, hammer, saw or other implement of destruction. The AC installs that were commented on were $100 window units that we redirected & made nautical "accommodations for". Namely bottom half of companionway hatch. - No holes in the boat - ESPECIALLY Below The Waterline :|

Marine AC installs have been done - but non of those owners have chimed in - yet.

Seriously, think twice - & then a third time if you still want to put a hole below the waterline in this kind of boat

I know. It is scary. But it was done before. And the unit that I chose, Marineair Micra is small enough to be run on batteries for several hours. Believe me I won't cut until 100 % sure of result.

"Marineair Micra is small enough to be run on batteries for several hours" :?: :?: :?:
Can you put up the specs (BTU and wattage) for this unit?
I can't imagine any sufficient AC running for hours on the batteries of a :macm: :macx: :tat26: :mac19: :?

Also, The water ballast covers the whole bottom :( of the boat inside the (2) risers shown in your drawing. I think :) :macx:

The AC page is here http://www.marinaire.com/Marine-air-con ... aQod4VAPtg
Is 500 W and the pump will be another 100 W. But keep in mind that I have about 300 Ah installed, which is unusual for an x.

Now talking about the water ballast, that is what I am afraid of- tiny space between inside and outside that will interfere with good insulation. That is why I want to know if anybody did it before.

That setup will give you about 3 hours of AC with standard 300 Amp hour batteries. Does that fit your cruising needs? Seems pretty light to me.

Another convenience with a window unit is you can run it while on the trailer doing work or acting as an RV.

I think that you may find that 6000 BTUs is a little light for a water cooled unit. I had a 5000 BTU window unit and it cooled the center area ok. Went a 9000 BTU mermaid water cooled unit and it was not enough. Swapped it out for a 12000 BTU unit and I can cool from bow to stern. I have my water inlet under the port stern sleeping area outside the ballast stringer. Have pics of the install on boomboom2.blogspot.com
Hope this helps
