Do you tarp? How?

Just returned home from work at 5 am after getting 18 inches of heavy wet snow overnight.
Found the tarp ripped and collapsed into the cockpit.....

I just discovered that the only thing worse than a tarp that's too small - is a tarp that's too big!

I bought a 30x40 so it would cover my bimini down to the waterline. But at the prow, I've got about 24 feet too much! There's so much excess that there's no way to tie it off to the trailer. It just bags and fills with air, which is the worst case for fatigue (tarp) and abrasion (gel oat).

Luckily I ran across a fellow club member who has a tarp that's too small and would be happy to trade up.

Me too. Lots of snow and ice on the tarp as my PVC supports came loose in a wind storm. My block of wood that was supporting the middle of the mast came out and the mast was pinned to the deck in a terrifying U shape with the weight of the snow and ice.
Shoveling and cutting the tarp and ice away it bounced back up. I had bathtub sized blocks of ice I released (couldn't lift them).

I'm now tarpless.

Snow isn't going to kill the boat. Ice getting into fittings isn't good, but I'm not climbing up there to replace the tarp this year.

Yea, sorry for rubbing it in your face - it's 72 today and 77 this weekend with good breezes and nice sailing conditions. Very sunny. The rain started in December and stopped in January so I guess it's time to take the tarp off the boat. Winter has ended in Oceanside I guess. (I thought it would never end - that was a long two months).

Winter has never bothered me. Heavy snow, bring it on, I love it, just not shoveling it. It does make it hard on the Mac. After shoveling, I went sledding on the nearest hill.

I am looking forward to the tarp coming off though. Even sitting on the trailer in my driveway, Nice Aft is beautiful.

I don't know about Ray, but it's easier to walk on our sidewalks and driveways with the snow removed. In fact, it's the law to shovel sidewalks. I also remove it from the deck and hot tub as it makes entry in bare feet easier.
The winter doesn't bother me so much. I agree with Ray,it's the shoveling that's a PITA. I've seen heated drive and walkways. I'm too cheap, I'll shovel it.

One thing I have learned with the Jet Skis which I usually keep the nice Honda covers on then 3-5 layers of tarps on top of that. I learned long ago that tighter isn't better. Let it flap in the wind a little, not a lot that is bad also. Tarps seem to last longer when I use them just secured not stretched or loose. Usually 2 times a year here in the desert I have to buy a new tarp and then the last tarp get covered with the new one and usually one of the bottom tarps is soo tathered it isn't worth putting back on. The multiple layers seems to help quite a bit with UV damage and where as one doesn't ever seem to keep the skis dry and clean multiples guarantee it.

With regards to the Macgregors? I usually don't, we get cold, get snow and then within a couple days if the boat can get some sun (not covered) it melts and dries up. Plus usually when the boats are home during the winter I am working on them and they are rigged because I am too lazy to take the mast down after the Christmas lights come down and it is MUCH easier to come and go with the mast up anyways.
