I have used chlorine bleach with no problems and hot tub/pool dry chlorine bleach with no problems. It doesn't take much to eliminate algae and odor, since there aren't that many gallons of water. With the liquid I added a cup of household bleach. With the powder I added a couple tablespoons. Now I only occasionally add either since we seem to power without ballast at least once per week. I'm boating in fresh water.
