New companionway hatch :D

Post by Matty_M »

Hey all I was just out working on a new hatch for the 222 and figured I'd share some pics to see what you all think of it so far. So far I have the frame 'dry' installed, no sealant on it as of yet. The next step is to make the boards to seal her up. Let me know what you think of the frame :)
btw.... it looks shinier in person.... and we all know that shinyness is all that really matters ;)

Looks good so far.

I made a set of "boards" out of plexiglass for times when we are below and want a window.

Looks pretty good. What type wood are you using? I would recommend teak $$$$ :D Fair Winds and Full Sails...Old salt

Its a variety of woods.... some oak and some softwood. No offense to anybody that goes out and buys teak but personally I think it's a huge waste of money for a boat like this. Realistically even pine, if above the water line will probably outlast me on a trailer sailor and even if after 5-10 years or so it was rotten and falling off then I could replace it easily and cheaply. I wouldn't have even used oak except I had some lying around. Teak is super freaking expensive and if left exposed to deathrays from the sun would still have to be refinished yearly. I do like the look of teak though... I'm just not willing to spend the money on it when I could use said money for things like new tools *drool or other things for the ol' Venture

Russ:
Plexiglass is a pretty decent idea but I'll just be making some wooden boards... I haven't decided if I'm going to fancify them or just make plain wood ones yet though :P. When we finally make a pop top cover it's going to have windows all around it so we should get plenty of light. I make make a spare bottom slat with a vent (with flyscreen) for a bit of airflow when the boat is parked on the trailer.

Hi Matty: You are right, BUT ya don't live in the desert where even the rocks get bleached. :? I just keep an ample amount of Watco Danish Teak Oil on hand. BTW do you know what year your yatch is. Looks like late 60's early 70's before they put in liners. Our V-222 was 1972. Keep us posted on progress. A boat is a hole in the water where you pour lots of money. My wife installed a plaque on Freedom which reads, "Like a woman the rigging costs more than the hull." Fair Winds and Full Sails...Old Salt.

Aha true enough.... Sometimes I wish I did live in a desert rather than up north... at least then I wouldn't freeze 80% of the year
