How old is too old for booze??
I have an ancient bottle of drambouy probably from the sixties. Some one brought it over but we didn't actually try it. Its still sealed with tax tape and is 95 percent full.
Should I save it for desperate times or toss it?

Iz,
There is no advantage to letting it age. It is basically scotch and honey. If you enjoy the sweet stuff, drink it.

That's excellent advice. Hazmat disposal is not something an amateur should attempt. You need a professional.grady wrote:Don't risk it!!!! Send it to Highlander he will dispose of it properly for you!![]()
Fortunately, I think he has been identified, and he's willing to take one for humanity's sake.
Disaster averted.

Snork a bit of that Drambuie into some ginger ale with ice with a couple of limes and call it a "seasickness cure"...

Sort of a Drambuie Collins. Would make a nice sundowner.
Waiting for a verdict from the HazMat disposal team.

Throw it over some ice with a 2 or 3 to one ratio of Scotch to Drambui and your rusty nail experience will tell you all you need to know....

Re: How old is too old for booze??
I do not know much about booze shelf life. A friend of mine left two beers in the refer , stopped back buy 6 years latter drank half of one and poured out the other. So my take away is six year old beer is not good. Or maybe he had enough beer .

Master and Commander Highlander,
Simce you are now a member of the MacGregor Yacht Club of British Columbia - there may be certain local club guidelines for grog disposal in a non-hazardous and environmental friendly process which may differ from the MMOR ... after all you are a west coaster now.
MYCBC Club rule #23.1
Standard Operating Procedures for disposal of a conspicuous liquid.
1) a majority of the bridge members must be present, but not accounted for.
2) once the disposal process has begun it must not cease until all the hazorodous liquid is de-bottled.
3) in order to properly access the hazardous material, other dilute liquids added should be minimal (ice is acceptable)
4) no hazardous liquid byproducts produced by this process are to be released directly into the ocean.
5) mandatory PFD's must worn at all times once 2/3 of the process is complete.
6) no video or still photography may be taken during the disposal process ... or the next morning.

Now if you are talking beer or wine Highlander does not have the proper equipment to dispose of it. Please send it to me. I assure you, no Sailboat will be harmed in the proper disposal of it.Ponaldpe wrote:I do not know much about booze shelf life. More to your point...you won't know until you try it, and I would not do something like gift it or make it my contribution to a party. I have seen thirty-year-old bottles of whiskey be just fine, but five-year-old Bailey's be foul. The fact that it is not a straight spirit might be a problem, but my bet would be that it is fine.

Re: How old is too old for booze??
Well, FWIW, our resident hazardous liquids disposal expert has been known to perform flawlessly without pants on, so I don't think the wearing of pants is necessarily an indication of fitness for purpose. There's even photographic proof of that in another thread or two (or three) here.Spector wrote:How old is too old???
