Davis Mega Light Question?

Post by richandlori »

I just received my Davis Mega Light (#3300) and it comes with two different light bulbs. One the "low Energy" uses 0.110 amps and the "bright" bulb uses 0.320amps (all at 12v). Both of these are low amps which is good, but here is my question, can both bulbs be seen at 2nm or should I stick to the "bright" bulb? It is more amps but sill not going to break the amp/hr bank.

I read through their literature that came with the light, and they didn't address this issue.

Without more information, I would assume the higher power bulb is the 2nm rated one...

Last time I checked, this light was not a legal anchor light. I don't think either bulb gives even 1 nm visability.

I'd definitely go with the brighter of the two bulbs. They're both pretty dim. From talking with other sailors, I've heard that you can get away with using the Mega Light as an anchor light... but don't quote me on that. I'm just giving you third party rumors. They didn't discuss whether it put out the required amount of light, just that people use them as anchor lights. I bought the utility version of the Davis Mega Light, but didn't get to use it other than testing. It's pretty dim even with the brighter bulb.

As long as you use the brighter bulb, I doubt any legal authority would question it. However, if someone hits you, and their attorney/insurance company has a sharp investigator, not having an approved light may be enough for them to get partial liability assigned to you, and reduce their payout.

Just what I needed to hear after a great weekend of sailing...the threat of a lawsuit :x !

I plan on using the Davis Light as an anchor light for the short term and as a back-up once I have installed the official 2nm certified light when I get time and $. OK, really it is the running the wires up the mast that I have been avoiding, but I may get to it soon.

I do agree the the low energy bulb puts out squat for light, I tested it this weekend, so I will go with the brighter light.
