26M Vang Question

Post by adudinsk »

My used 26M :macm: has a Garhauer Vang on it, I was told the mast DOES NOT rotate, as the previous owner did not see any benefit to it and modified it.. etc.etc.etc..

My question is
1) does a mast with a Garhauer Vang still have a topping lift?
2) Should I modify the mast BACK to a rotating one? (I know I am told this may cause a lot of "feedback" ) or just leave it as is (I hear it MAY only get a fraction of a know improvement in speed.. and lots of needed maint on the ball bearings..etc.)

1) Yes it can still use a topping life. The only "vang" I know of is the boomkicker that doesn't
2) Yes. I replace my stock bearing with ball bearings and they work great. Does it make a difference? Who knows, but why not.

I was told my mast DID NOT move.. or rotate
It has a SOLID vang, not a boom kicker.. but a solid spring loaded bar.

Something like one of these

From what I see/was told.. its MUCH more solid and sturdy (and costly) over a boom kicker.

So prob do not need a topping lift.

Just making sure..

Have lots of tweaking to do..
Started sanding and polishing and touching up some tiny chips in gelcoat.
Need to add A/C shore power input/controller with Galvanic Isolater ( building my own.. super easy..)
Will rewire with 100% tinned marine grade wire.
Will relocate the 2 batteries on a tray with strap (again Ministry of Transport legal requirement in Canada.. no biggie)
Will have to check all rigging, tune the mast.. etc.etc..
Cushions for the Aft Cabin need to be fabricated.. (other post

lots of fun little projects.. Looking forward to it..
but my boat is tarped up now .. so I am just dying to get into it. :(

That looks like a nice vang. Then I guess you don't need a topping lift. I do like my simple topping lift as I can easily raise the boom high out of the way.

Do you have a photo of the mast base? Maybe it was modified so it won't rotate.
Factory stock had a rotating plate.

Boat is all wrapped up... but the owner insisted that because of the vang, he tacked the mast so it would not rotate.
Said it did little for performance.. and with the vang.. and his setup.said he rather have had the vang then a rotating mast.
I asked would it take much to reverse it if I wanted. He said no.. but felt it was not worth it. After talking/sailing with him. I was sure he 1!0% knew what he was doing.

We could not spend too much time on the sea trial, as we had to close before the broker went home.. (we drove 4hrs to see the boat) and had to bail... pay...etc.

Overall.. a very well kept boat..
Owner was fantastic... had all manuals for all hardware.. sent me emails with (huge) with step by step instructions..etc.

I have some wiring to do.. a tiny bit of work.. so I guess I will practice raising/lowering the mast on the hard when I unwrap the boat.

(wife is very excited.... looking forward to this upcoming boating season)

Hi AD

Your mast will rotate. Keep the brass pin out, after removing from the bow from trailering. I used that pin to keep it locked out as I found no benefit to rotation and was problematic at best. However, if you want to, keep pin out and after tacking, pull back on main sheets between boom and traveler. That will make the mast rotate if it didn't do it automatically.

The rigid van was given to me by Highlander from this site. It is an expensive add on and very strong. You do not need a topping lift with this unit as it is sprung to raise the boom. If you sheet out, the boom will raise. You actually have to pull it down to make it parallel with the boat. Will never crash down on your head once the mainsail has been lowered. Great unit.

Here's hoping for a short winter

Cheers

Hi All ,
I have the same rigid vang as Beene had they " Garhauer" make one for the 26M rotating mast it has a swivel brkt on the mast attachment , so if ur,s doe,s not have that it,s not specific to the 26M maybe the P/O bought it used ? off another boat !, I still use the topping lift as it,s handy for installing the boom attach it to the boom end & it holds the end of the boom for u while u attach the Goosekneck , plus I run flags off it . , when I installed my rigid vang I made alum flat bars " backing plates" for inside the mast & boom the same length as the two small tracks , I drilled out the bars tapped them out to 1/4" bolt size & installed with s/s threaded screws

Thanks Geoff
I agree about the pin in/out. Everyone says VERY little if any improvement in speed.
May be fun to play around with in the future.. but will plan on keeping it simple so until I get used to the Pegasus.. I will keep it in.

Planning lots of fun upgrades on the boat.
LED lights
RGB led
A/C
Shore power panel
Galvanic Isolater

Am looking into some nav upgrades for the future (Wife approved only)
Will post to show everyone how its going.
Currently the boat is in cocoon state, so I am dying to get inside and start work..
Looking forward to this sprint.

Thanks for the feed back,

Oh, and yes.. if you leave the mast to rotate, I am reading/being told there is LOTS of maint. (bearings every 1-2 years..etc)

Thanks Again!

One other question, regarding the bow sprit, when flying the spin, should I tie it off down to the bow tie under it? I see photos of some tied,. some not.

Thanks
