Even one pic of the stanchion mod in partially removed state would help. Did you slip another tube inside to make it work, or do something more imaginative?

How much did you have to drink before you could cut the stanchion in half? :|

Yes, there is a stainless sleeve inside. The cut is nearly invisible because i used a pipe cutter. The boat is under a tarp right now and it's raining.

Nice.

Got plenty of time. Watching the pollen collect on my truck and cleaning up my shop. Whenever you get around to it.

Hmmmm, I've got plenty of time before the pollen even starts collecting on anything. It snowed yesterday morning, and we're still a ways off and a foot from our annual snow average of 100 inches. :P

As to spreaders, I just unplug mine and wrap them to the mast, along with the shrouds, using small bungies.

Yeah Tom, but did you see that bomb bunker that Jimmy has for his boat?? It's tall enough to park the boat inside and it's tornado and atom bomb proof with concrete blocks. He even has a wooden ventilator system to keep the radiation out when the nuclear blast passes over his 'garage'.

I barely got 8 feet on the side of my property for a driveway and the eaves on my house overhang into the boats pass-through area forcing me to have modified stanchions.

Not Jimmy, he has a bomb proof castle where he can hide and survive when the end comes. I wonder if he would let us inside when the apocalypse occurs? He probably thinks I want to steal the plans for his Harken Flux Capacitor.

Ah, yes - now I remember when, and why, you did that mod. Time flies when you own a Mac (or something).

Oh, and when they drop the big one, I want to be directly under it. I don't want to be around for the aftermath. The preppers can have it. They can even have my Mac, and my Sprinter Class B for that matter, if there's anything left. :|

Sorry about the snow Tom.

But, thanks for the idea about unplugging the spreaders!

You'll always be welcome (unless you've been drinking Corona)... But if they drop the big one, I'll be outside with Tom trying to catch it.

My neighbors all laughed at me for buying this lot. They got a pretty good chuckle when the track hoe and dozer cut the big hole in the hill. They asked me if I was building a mooring area for ships when I placed the concrete foundation. When I was filling the block walls, the pumping company sent a 2-1/2" hose pumper instead of a boom pumper. The hose clogged about halfway through and the operator gave it a "bump". When the clog came through, it kicked the hose out of my grasp, covering me in concrete as the hose went back over my right shoulder - metal fitting barely missing my head. I gathered up the hose and went back up the ladder. After several minutes, I felt a burning sensation at several locations. Turns out that concrete will take the meat off. So, I stripped down to my boxers and finished the placement while my dad sprayed me with a garden hose to try and stop the burning. Many neighbors have seen me soaking wet in boxer shorts and wading boots, with raw meat scattered over my 6'-2" frame. In short, my neighbors aren't too sure about me. The house is about average in my neighborhood. South Alabama real estate is a fraction of New York and California. I would be living in a cardboard box in either of those markets.

So, thanks for the Castle remark, even if you're joking. It's a nice change from "the crazy old guy's house". :)

I use plated PTO pins to lock them into the sockets. The spreaders are biased upward slightly so they flatten as tension is put on the shrouds (they are quite stretchy, after all). I can just about pull them out with the pins removed.

The PTO pins have been in there for years and are just now showing a little rust. Time for new ones, which are quite cheap. I've seen stainless PTO pins somewhere, but couldn't find them the last time I looked. But no matter. If sailing on salt water, they probably won't last as long, but again, they're cheap. I think I got them at Home Depot, in fact.

Thanks for the story and laugh. :D

I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but the image of pouring concrete in wet boxers is hysterical. No doubt a great first impression for neighbors.

Hi Gents,

Old thread I know.... but back on this subject. Did anyone ever try my BabyStay Tension Control System (BTCS :P )? .... Just use two high performance bungees :D
Since I originally posted this information (long ago!) I've raised and lowered my mast on choppy open water (on swing moorings) many times and this method has worked really well for me.
