Macgregor 26x. Correct prop for repower 60hp bigfoot

Post by Beherenow »

I just purchased a 26x, wanted something newer so decided to get a 2015 merc 60hp high output Bigfoot. 20inch shaft , any guidance on a correct prop would be greatly appreciated!

I run a 13.75 x 13, 3-blade, on my 60 etec. It tops out between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. Hopefully some of the Bigfoot crew will weigh in...

It is a good motor for the M. Right at 19.5 mph with 4 adults and no ballast. Just a few mph slower with ballast. The M stern has limited space, so the small powerhead makes for easy boarding. The low profile is clear of the helm seat when tilted. The way I use it, I could get away with a 25 about 95% of the time. But it's nice to be able to plane on occasion.

If I had water skiers, I'd probably want a little more motor. I think the 60 should tube ok, though. I'm 62, primarily day sail, kids are grown, grandkids haven't gotten old enough to tube or ski yet. Nieces are about tubing age, but covid has put the squelch on a lot of family traveling and gathering. The 60 suits me just fine.

Big down side with the etec is, they have quit making them. So, parts/support may become a problem. Especially for us gearheads that keep stuff forever.

I have both a 14 x 9 and a 14 x 10. Tried them both on my Mercury BF60, the 10 performs better than the 9. Running at 4500 ft elevation so I don't get the speeds others do. Someday I hope to run at or near sea level with the 10 pitch so I can compare performance.

I have a Merc 60 Bigfoot on an M... can attest the upper side. I have a 14 x 11. It is too tall... WOT gives me 17.5 knots at 5250 rpm with an empty boat and it won't break 5000 rpm as normally loaded. I've heard 14 x 10 is the sweet spot and will allow WOT to get up to the 6000 red line.

I was suprised to find that props that will fit on non-Merc outboards, will not fit on Merc outboards (clearance) - so be aware. 8)

And because of the different gear ratio in the foot, you wouldn't even use the same prop as a Merc 60hp 4-stroke (non-BF) on the same boat.

Excellent point!

I saw he was a fairly new member and hadn't posted much, so thought I'd give him a reply. I knew the Etec info wouldn't do him much good, but was hoping the interaction would stir up some interest.

Hope I didn't offend any of my Bigfoot brethren... :|

:D - You crack me up! Yeah! We're an elitist crowd ain't we? :P Bunch of good ole boys with our Mopar, Nascar, Apple Pie and Mercury fish'n motors.

I think @kurz has the 14x10 on his Bigfoot and is getting good numbers. Maybe, he'll chime in to confirm.
