Restore shine to the black permanently

Post by panda »

What's the best way to restore shine to the black gelcoat stripes surrounding windows preferably permanently? I used ZEP acrylic floor polish this spring at it looked good for two months, and then it started to fade again. Did anyone tried Nuglass or something like that? Need something that would last for at least a year.

I had good results with Meguiar's 49 Oxidation Remover. Made to remove "moderate oxidation, water spots, and scratches from gel coat". After that, apply a good coat of UV resistant marine wax. You should be good at least for the season if not the year.
The key to inner peace is to admit you have a problem and leave it at that.

Early this Spring I binge-watched this guy's videos how to detail a boat.
He does this for a living and seems to know his stuff.

So I bought this Jescar Power Lock+ he uses. There is a link below his video.
The stuff is $32 a bottle and I used about half a bottle on the boat and one of my cars. I also bought a dual-action random orbital polisher (not the expensive one he uses).

For the first time in 10 years, my boat's gelcoat did not fade over the season. The black is still black and the blue hull looks great.
He claims it prevents water spots because it sheets the water off rather than bead. Drake is my hero. It works great.

The problem with the black around the windows is due to MacGregor trying to save a couple of bucks. It is a gelcoat issue that a buff and wax will not solve over the long haul.

If you add another coat, it will glisten for years. Thankfully, it is a small area and you can do it easily enough with the roll and tip method.

I gave up years ago.

I finally just painted over the raccoon stripes.

It’s been quite a few years now, so it may be time to do it again next spring.

Benjamin Moore impervex latex high gloss enamel (black). It’s a thin paint, so be certain to tape well.

Just google "Roll and tip painting"... you'll see many videos and descriptions. Basically, one guy rolls it on with a foam roller, and the other follow behind and brushes it flat. Leaves a nice finish, when done properly.
