Day on Mobile Bay

Post by Jimmyt »

The Admiral and I had a good trip last weekend. I got a buddy to help me drop her in on Friday evening (waited until it cooled off some). Then we put her in another buddy’s slip so the Admiral could just hop on board Saturday morning.

We got to the boat about 0930, put the cooler and our day bags on and untied the lines. I completely understand why so many folks keep their boats in the water….

We had 6-10 knots until about 1100, so some decent sailing in the morning. Then, it went calm. So, we dropped sails and decided to check on some of our friends who live on the western shore about 7 miles south of where we were. We fired up the Etec 60 and made a leisurely 12 knot run south. As we were passing the west end of Gaillard island, we started seeing fins and slowed to just above idle. There were several dolphins playing about, some young ones. By the time I realized I should be taking pics, we had gotten too far from them.

We sent a text to our buddies to see if they were home, then anchored a respectable distance out from the end of their wharf and ate lunch. About the time we wrapped up lunch, our buddies answered our text and came out to go swimming and visit with us. We had a nice in water visit, then the Admirals got aboard so my wife could give the requisite boat tour. Unfortunately, they had an afternoon engagement and couldn’t go sailing with us. Next time…

The sea breeze kicked in around 1330, and we had great sailing going back to the north until about 1800.

We took the mast down, and rigged her for trailering while tied to the dock. Less mosquitos and more breeze than in the ramp parking lot. Got her home, washed her off, flushed the motor and put her back in the garage. We had a great day, but when we sat down at 2030, we were done.

I’ll try to take more pics next time.

Which reminds me. I still need to empty and clean my toilet.

Yeah, sorry about the silent treatment. No real health issues right now, just way over-committed. I thought retirement was supposed to be leisurely. I’m busier than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
