Stay with etec?

Post by Ixneigh »

Power tilt seems like it’s going out on my motor.
Rebuilt one is 700.
New etec 50 is 3500.
Motors 14 years old.
Maybe time?
The thirty hp is 2500
from some site buried five pages into the search results.
Anyone know if the thirty will hook up to my existing controls?
Other motor recs?
Thanks
Ix

Hi Ixneigh!

If the motor fires up and runs nice it may be worth looking into the tilt system.
Not sure about how an eTec is set up but some tilt systems are hydraulic pump/cylinder arrangements.
Maybe just a cylinder seal to replace or leaked fluid needing a refill.
Hate to see you go through all the hassle of replacement of a good running engine.

For what it’s worth, we started with a 2000 vintage Tohatsu 50 that needed new carbs as it couldn’t be adjusted to a reasonable idle anymore as well as the inherent high fuel consumption of a 2 stroke. We changed to a 4 stroke Suzuki DF60AV and have really enjoyed it for its reliability, fuel economy and how much quieter it is.

Best Regards,

The ETEC 50 was a great motor -- when it was running. Loved it to death (almost) But when it stopped working, it was a major PITA, as you well know. I decided to bite the bullet last year and went 4 stroke. I dunno... hit a bunch of bumps right off the bat (the local Yamaha dealer who installed it did a pretty shoddy job, since I purchased the engine from a third party, not from him) The engine works fine as it well should (it was brand-new). Maybe sips a little more gas and the cooling water stream seems thinner. The temperature alarm rang once when I had it too long in neutral, seemingly. But what I miss most was the self-fogging feature of the ETEC. When I winterized the Yamaha in the fall, it was a super-production I didn't really need.
But I guess you won't have that issue down in Florida.

Pluses and minuses. I was getting pretty nervous as Evinrude no longer manufactures ETECS. I guess spare parts may still be gotten off the shelf, but even my local ETEC mechanic kind of sighed, but gave me his blessing. Looking forward to testing the Yamaha more extensively this summer.
Can't believe you could find a new ETEC for $ 3500. Word here is, it is still popular up north, but not so much down south
