Macgregor 19 trailer

Post by Rxwoman »

Hello all
I'm the latest owner of a 1993 MacGregor 19, that came without a title, only a bill of sale.
It's also missing the mast, which I'm working on replacing.

My question though is about the trailer.
I found the stamped into metal trailer VIN on the passenger side metal tubing.
But it's so rusted it's hard to make out.
I've managed to uncover all but 2 of the first 4 characters.
It's my understanding that these were all made in Costa Mesa. Since the first several characters of a VIN is just code for where and who a "vehicle" was made, shouldn't ALL M-19 trailers start with the same first several characters?
I have a "1" something then "6" and something. The rest are legible. Can anyone PLEASE just tell me what those missing characters are?
Thank you.

My research shows that the tenth figure represents the year. So “P” could be 93. On my 2005 M, the trailer was made in 04, so I guess a “P” could be 92?

The 116 is MacGregor’s number, but because they are no longer in business, it is now another business’s ID.

For my 2005M, this is my trailer ID# 116BJ17A04C001729. The 1729 indicates that it was the 1,729 trailer made. I bought my boat in October 2004.

Hi Rxwoman!

Congratulations on your new to you Mac19!
What a nice boat!

I suspect you are after the trailer VIN for local state registration.
I’ve run into situations similar to what you are going through so you’re not alone.

If you have the prior license plate your DMV might be able to do a back check to see what the VIN associated with that tag was.
You need to verify that against whatever information you’ve gotten off the trailer so far that it matches up.
NOTE: Sometimes tags get ‘inadvertently’ swapped around and it may not match with what you actually have!

In New Hampshire the process for ‘replacing’ a lost/damaged or unreadable trailer VIN is relatively straight forward.
We do things through the town clerk or through DMV but the process is pretty much the same.
Call them up and let them know what you are dealing with.
They with either provide or direct you to a form that requests a new VIN for the trailer.
Generally there is a requirement that a local LEO come out and officially verify that the existing VIN is missing/damaged/illegible.
Then the Clerk or DMV will issue a ‘new’ replacement VIN to you which you then have to permanently mark onto the trailer.
Generally this can be either stamped, vibroscribed, a plaque riveted or painted on.
I’ve done all the above… but ask them what they require as it can vary from state to state.

It’s really not much to accomplish and is relatively painless.
A little time consuming, but relatively painless.

Best Regards,
