Finally! 1/48th scale 26X replica - perfect in every detail!

Post by DaveC426913 »

I finally finished* it. Whew!

Took me about 10 years, after some serious "project rot" after which I had to start again from scratch.

*OK, not 100% finished. A few tweaks I'd like to make.

:D In the subject space you didn’t say you made it out of LEGO's :!:

I like the professional photo backdrop using a bath towel.

Well done.

Nice. You could sell those as kits if Lego would not mind

Are those gun turrets on the bow? 😄

I’d want one! 8) 8)

I think the diagonal pipes at the bow are the bow rails if I’m not mistaken.

Great job! Love it!

I know. I was joking.

Reminded me of Doug W’s “cannon” on his foredeck he would fire to announce things.

I’m in awe of Lego artists and what they can build

They certainly do not mind.

There is an entire global industry built around supporting "MOC" (My Own Creation) builds. They have a creation app that lets you build anything you like in 3D with any LEGO parts ever produced:

It even makes visual building booklets just like those that come with store kits:

It spits out a list of all parts by product number right into an order sheet. There is an entire industry of private distributors all over the world that you can order from with a single click. You can even compare prices and choose what you prefer. One or two clicks, and I can have the parts delivered from one vendor or ten:

Image

(I make it sound trivial, but the actually sourcing of parts is a bit of a juggle, mostly because of minimum buy limits and payment types (I don't have a PayPal account, but most support Debit and eTransfer.)) Ultimately. I got parts from about eight vendors. Most of which I tried to ensure were Canadian, but I think one order came from Germany.

I have not yet figured out if it is feasible effort-wise to sell kits.

Part of my motivation was the assumption that other Mac owners might be interested.

Of course, that immediately raises a bunch of issues:
- not everyone has the same gear as I do. Maybe you don't want the bimini. Maybe your sail covers are grey, or red.
- not everyone even has the same model (maybe someday I'll create an M in blue)
- it is a pain to actually order and collect the parts (about 300) across various vendors
- there's then the issue of checking, repackaging and shipping the kits along with instructions
- what happens if a kit is missing a part? We go through the process again, on a smaller scale
- will it be too expensive? I'm not even sure how much *I* paid
- the price will fluctuate with supply
- I'd have to calc and add shipping costs

Wow. LEGO is so cool.

Now make an M version. :D

The LEGO universe is new to me. I'm learning how massive their base really is.

Hi DaveC426913!

Wow! I never knew!
Thank you for sharing this information and process. ITS REALLY INTERESTING! 8) 8)

I fully understand the complexity of “making kits” and distribution. It is no small task! :o :?

As I’m an old foggy and long past the life phase of having kids around with Legos under foot (stepping on one in the dead of night is 8) 8) definitely a ‘night to remember’ experience :D :D :D from my younger days) would it be possible for you to share your parts list and the suppliers you utilized for those of us who might be interested in making a replica of your project?

I’m thinking that it would be a fun thing to do even as an old foggy! 8)
I’m also thinking that there are other members on the forum in a lot of different places around that have kids and grandkids that this would be a fun project to do, (or get), from Grammy &/or Grampy.

Given its early enough in the year those interested would have enough time to get started now contacting/procuring/receiving the parts in so they could be available for the end of year holidays. (Yeah, I know this kind of thinking shows a bit of advanced planning but we are MacGregor owners after all :D :D :D )

Just a thought…..

Best Regards,
Over Easy 8) 8)

YES! I remember that now! I’d forgotten!
What a character! Arriving at his anchorage gathering with his own naval cannon announcement! :D :D :D

:D :D :D I wonder if he’s still doing that. What a great way to make an entrance! :D :D :D

I will. But I've got some tweaking and polishing to do first.
