Guys,
Thanks for all of the info. I finally had a chance to crawl under the tarp, and before frostbite set in, take a look at what you all have been describing. Thanks! I'll have no problem making the repair, and will have a spare ready if there is a next time.

I thought I was the only one that bent a spreader the first time I lowered the mast!!!! Thanks for the reasurance. Question...mine is not bent very much but I can see some "strain" in the aluminum. Can it survive like that or is a slight bend accepable or am I crazy even to consider not changing it?

first thing I did with my '05 26M: bent a spreader - a check of the other spreader showed a ring of abrasion wear around the insertion point in the mast fitting and next to it a symmetrical bulge all around the the pipe - the bent spreader had the same wear.
The short story: Spreaders seem to wear out, so I replaced both - but followed the advice given here and inserted a snug fitting PVC pipe the whole length. There was little added weight and it worked like a charm.

I saw my name as the initial poster on this thread and I could not remember doing it, then I saw the date. Over two years ago. Wow! Time is zipping by.

I bent a spreader while doing the Mac mast-deck dance in my driveway. So while looking at local sources for a replacement, what are current Mac supplier options? KHE, BWY,...?

I just added make spare spreaders to my to do list, this sound like one of those "it's not a question of if, but rather when" items.

yup in 8 years I have bent 2 and broken 1 and I keep a home made spare under the aft berth
On edit: not having a spare can shorten a weekend in a blink. If you have a spare spreader you are inconvenience for about 15-20 minutes.
Down at stockton lake we changed one on the water.
