Cruising in a Mac, You bet!!! A lot of people do.
Stay one winter and you won't want to go back home for the winters again.
With that said, the place is warm and mild in the winter with not much rain. Summers are the down side. The named storms is the badest part. The land is getting really pricey. Each area is a little different to quite a lot. If the Keys are to pricey or to much problems then try the west coast, east coast or central or inland. Only an 850 mile loop. Get an idea of what type of lifestyle and $$$$ that you want. Some place in south/southeast/southwest/central Florida or Keys has it. Any lifestyle.

Florida climate
For someone from the sunny UK, I would represent FLorida as having almost no rain in the winter but you might find it unbearable in the summer from heat and humidity compared the marine temperate UK
(enw - I vacation with my Aunt in Telford and Wales on occasion (we are displaced British as a young lad) ...when I give blood here in the States and they ask me what countries I have visited , I mention Wales - of course they have to go to a map to find it....

Oops - sorry if my reference to GB in another thread was faux pas?? - but England, Wales & Scotland are still GB, right? I know it's deplorable, but History was never a favorite school subject for me.enw wrote:Im fromt the uk (wales not england!) ...
(And then to use the French 'faux pas' to describe the insult - how insulting!)
In a Catholic grade school, "England" was twice the boogie man, for splintering the Faith (history of religion), PLUS the woes that spawned our revolution. Actually, perhaps USA knowledge of UK history has declined as USA generations recede from "immigration" times, and from WW II. A Biz associate who is transplanted from Ireland to Texas revealed "friendly affront" when I used UK in reference to his homeland. (Oops again! ... Ireland has been "free" of the UK since 1920.)

I would say it is a great place to go, but not sure if it is a great place to live. The prices of everything is very high and with the storms intensifying every year, summer seams to have become the Chinese fire drill. I love the area, my wife and I go often, except the birth of our son has slowed the trips. Now that he is 21 months the trips shall begin again. We live right on the Georgia - Florida boarder. I have also lived in Jacksonville, Deltona, and Titusville Florida. I like to go to the Keys in fall, winter, and spring. I usually pass on summer because of the crowds from U.S. schools being out and the storms that hit. I stay in the waters on the Big bend of Florida and the Atlantic Georgia/Florida area.enw wrote:Im fromt the uk (wales not england!) and am considering a second home out there. If you want the most bang for your buck (money) in a second home with good sailing waters then I would suggest the Big bend area of Florida (Northern Gulf side of Florida) or the Carolina - Georgia - Northern Florida Atlantic waters. Everything is easy to get to from these areas and not so high in price for both land and living expenses.

Hiya,
Before you look at Florida, check the Bahamas out (No tax here) the out islands are superb cruising grounds for a Mac, we have 98,
on Long Island, and the Caribbean side of this island is perfect for Macs, shallow and usually calm.
We are also from the UK (left 10 years ago)
If you need any info about the islands just ask.
By the way, won't you miss the sheep? (just joking)
