It was grounded. I'll see if a small appliance shop will look at it.

Great make sure you tell them its 12 volt motor.
I know its frustrating but your almost there. If the motor has a short or
one of the brushes broke our became disconected then it should be cheap enough to fix. If you can turn it by hand like you said then lets hope it simple fix.

I hope you pick it up from the shop and they say its fixed and that will be 11 dollars and 20 cents.

Man Ill tell ya some of this stuff can drive you crazy, I have a suzuki sam.
car that I about dumped in a lake, It had an overheating problem and I changed everything I mean radiator water pump thermostat, everything and it still overheated. I spent a week on that thing and just when Im ready to give up and take it in to a shop. I fixed it. I was driving it at night and the temp gauge started to climb big time again. I was near the place
where I keep the Mac and went over there because they have a hose I could use to cool it. When I got there the place is all lighted so I turned my headlights off opened the hood and was ready to cool it off with the hose when I touched the radiator, It was cool it didnt burn me. I checked the gauge and it read cool. So I decided to try and make it home. I tuned the lights back on and guess what, It overheated again. AHHHHHH
Turned the lights off it went to cool. It turned out to be a starter motor
bolt was loose and the battery ground is attached there. It was grounding and not grounding very well.

So hang in there well fix er

Electric shop said (without even looking at it) $80 to replace the brushes and that's all they could do with no guarantee that would fix it so it would be best to check replacement cost first. Went to marina shop...$424 to replace it!!!

. Went to another electric shop and as I was walking up the sidewalk with my tiny little motor wrapped up in my rag, they were taking another motor in the back door for servicing on a forklift. I was afraid they would laugh at me when I unwrapped my rag. But get this....the guy promised to actually open it up and take a look to see if it is worth repairing...imagine that!

Even if I have to fork out the $424, I can console myself with the knowledge that I diagnosed the problem and got it out and re-installed the new one myself....with my team of experts of course.

See if you have someplace in your city that refurbishes electric motors. Call first.

80 bucks for brushes, sounds like the guy couldnt tell you what was wrong anyway. The second place sounds more like it. It least they will check it out. Also look on ebay they have whole power trim units sometimes for a couple hundred. But electric motors are repairable for the most part. Thats why the guy brought in a forklift motor instead of buying a new motor. No sure thing its the brushes but it would be nice if thats all it was.

Woohooo! Just heard from the shop that was looking at my trim motor. They've got it working....50 bucks!!! Thank you so much for your help everyone, and especially Aya!! Now I just have to find the time to pick it up and reinstall it and I'm out on the water....

50 bucks thats robbery, Tell him to keep it, Wait did you say a new one was hundreds of dollars? Better bring the guy a cup of coffee and a roll be real nice offer a tip........glad it worked out.

Can you tell me what was wrong with the motor in the first place? broken brush wire? shorted? It feels like it was my problem and got a break today..

He said a circuit was open at the brushes (?!) It sounded fairly minor and $50 bucks does sound like a lot for a minor problem...but I paid it with a big smile on by face because the replacement was $424 plus tax.

Now, once I reinstall it, what do I refill the pump with? It looked like red power steering fluid when it ran all over my hand. Do I just fill up that opening that the motor sits on?

I think Walmart sells power trim/tilt fluid. If I recall, it is basically automatic transmission fluid. But I would check the owner's manual to be sure. Way to go on the repair.
