Perfect bimini for the 26M

Post by parrothead »

I didn't order the MacGregor bimini with our :macm: last year because it didn't seem to take full advantage of the new model's mainsheet location. With neither a backstay nor a pedestal-mounted sheet to interfere, why not go for maximum shade? We had installed a 6' bimini on our I/O bowrider, so (just prior to selling that boat) we tried a test-fit on the Mac to see how far off it was in size. Although purportedly too wide for the Mac, it was perfect!

So here's the ticket: order a 3-bow, 6' long, 79"-84" wide, 30"-36" high Hurricane Bimini Top from Overtons.com [item # 29793 if you want it in Sunbrella] and a set of the MacGregor genoa track bimini mounts from Bill or your favorite Mac dealer. I know the tracks on the Mac are only 72" apart -- but it will fit! And the wider the top, the more shade you get.

When folded back with its cover zipped on, it will rest right on top of the aft stanchions [put rubber caps on top of them] and snugly inside the lifelines [ours have vinyl covers] -- no interference with opening the helm seat, or boarding from the ladder, or dropping the mast onto the arch -- and no extra support poles needed. When up, it can be positioned anywhere along the length of the genoa track, depending on the angle of the sun. Even fully forward it doesn't conflict with the mainsheet. And it's the perfect height for a fixed-height bimini -- doesn't interfere with the boom on any point of sail, yet it is possible [for me, at 5'11"] to stand under it with only a bit of a slouch.

Again, this is not the top for you if you have an :macx: -- but for some of us, it seems ideal. 8)

[on edit - for some reason when I first posted this, I was thinking that the pedestal-mounted mast support on the '03-04 M would pose a problem - obviously it wouldn't.... this bimini should work on any 26M]

No photos at the moment. I will gladly take some, but am not really familiar with the method of posting them on this Board. I think it requires opening some sort of account on another server.

Your bimini is certainly valid as a Mac Mod.
That means you can post a couple of pix right here, on a Mac Mods page.

Ordered one! I've been measuring and thinking about a 6 footer for a while and your results are all it took to pull the trigger; thanks for the feedback. I already have the tracks from Bill.

I also found a 10% off code for Overtons. VPSAVE10. It came to $267.97 second day.

Let the sun shine!

Frank,

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't realized how the mods page works. Very user-friendly! I've posted 2 photos: one of the white "test bimini" folded back and covered, and a second of the our new Sunbrella bimini set up.

Bimini

Post by Nickyd »

Thanks Parrothead and DGA. I ordered the bimini from Overtons and am waiting for the track mounts from Bill. Got the 10% off too. I sure did not want the stock black Mac bimini. In our 95 degree days it would reradiate way too much heat.

And once you've posted a picture in the Mods page, you can do this, Parrot .... very nice!

Here's a view of the shady side of the bimini (so what if it was 90+ degrees yesterday?). I don't know how we endured a full summer without it.

I put ours up Sat. Looks great on the boat. The only think I noticed is there weren't holes for the front straps to screw into the frame.

That's odd. All the pre-drills were there on ours.
Perhaps your frame was drilled on a Monday

Says "Made in Mexico" on the label, they must have been planning on drilling those manana;) Besides the holes very pleased with it. Now if they just made an expensive dodger that would work for the mac.

Perfect bimini for the M

Post by Tahoe Jack »

Any of you M folks using the Overton bimini see issue with the same unit on an X. Guessing the backstay may conflict? Any X'ers out there with experience on this? 8) Jack

Jack,

I don't have personal experience with sailing the X (although we did check out some used ones, as well as a 26C, before ordering our M). I assume that the backstay could be detached, run through a hole in the top, and then re-attached, since once in place it would not be moving in relationship to the top fabric. My belief is that the location of the X's mainsheet attachment point on the pedestal would present the major conflict with Overton's 6'-long bimini.

bimini mounting trouble

Post by popI »

Having trouble with installation. I have the same unit as specified by you guys on a 26M. The natural spread of the bimini arms is a foot more than the genoa tracks. Should I just pull them in and mount them? Or should I cut down the bows by aa couple inches and/or bend the arms in a bit. how can one do this reliably ? Also, the height seems like it might be excsessive for boom clearance? any thoghts appreciated.
