Auxilliary engine for 26M

Post by Flying Scotsman »

Anyone have any ideas of where to fit an Auxilliary engine to the transom of the 26M - Have Yamaha 50HP and twin fins - seems to leave no room. Also what HP could drive the 26 M in an emergency - would 2HP do it or is that way too little? Thanks!

I don't recall anyone finding a way - except for a rail mounting for a dinghy aux. Here is one of many links to discussions on this:

This was actually one of the reasons (although not THE major reason) I chose to go with the x instead ....

Here's where I mounted mine but I don't think it can be used as propulsion.

Sure it can. Although, you might have to drill a hole in the hull the get the water line high enough...

I plan on putting mine on the stearn rail seat with a motor mount. I will be getting a 5 hp 4 stroke. It weighs over 55 pounds! A little to heavy to be lifting off the dinghy. I will be needing some sort of lift.

A 3 hp will push the Mac but not too fast and if you do not have much wind. It might be better to tie the dinghy to the side of the boat than to mount it on the swim ladder.

James,
I couldn't get my motor mount to fit anywhere on my stern seats because the tubing is on a curve at all points and it wouldn't clamp. Possibly you could use a dremel to match it.

I'm thinking about just mounting the 1.5 hp o/b I have on the mast support arch. It is wicked light..I'll make some kind of mounting plate for it or something. Or just leave it on the dingy(I know not the best choice).

James the motor mount that Scott and I put on our ladder is rated for 80 pounds. The ladder can hold a lot more, when you want to install the motor to the dingy and its heavy you have the crew lower the motor
down to you with a rope on the ladder, you can lower the motor right into the dink. for an easy install.

also before you buy a dink motor you might want to think about
getting a good used 2 stroke. I have a 4 hp 2stroke that weighs 29 pounds.

also my guess is in a pinch you could lower the ladder tilt the motor all the way up and use it as an aux to move the mac. I havent tried this but
it should work with some kind of pvc brace to keep the motor from moving the ladder up. This might cause some stress on the motor
swival because I dont think they were designed to work tilted like that but
it could work.

also if you do want a four stroke Scotts 2.5 suz works great and its very light. You also sound like you need two of everything like me. (want)

My other dink motor is a 15hp 2stroke that weighs 60 pounds I have lifted it on and off the dink, its awkward but it can be done. But the dink a 9.5
inflatable flat flys with this motor. But I would not want kids running around with it, It doesnt feel stable enough in tight turns to me.

Paul that motor mount we have on the ladder works perfect.
and as I dont use the ladder after the boat is launched ever, its not in the way.

again I have found that for me the best way to enter and exit the boat on
a mooring into a dink is to sit on top of my big motor, feet in the dink and im in.
some use a ladder on the side of the mac but the way I do it works great for me and Karen. when moored I always put the rudders down and ladder down motor down, exit from the left side of the big motor.

back to back?

I've seen add on mounts for electric troll motors that go in the back of the big gas motor. Have you looked inot fabricating a mount for your auxillary to ride piggyback on the main motor? Steering would be no problem, but starting a manual start migh be a reach.

Can't help with ideas on where to mount, since I have an X. I do use my Nissan 3.5 two stroke as a trolling motor on a lowerable motor mount, and also power my dinghy with it. In smooth conditions I can troll the X at 2.5 to 3 knots with the kicker running about 1/2 throttle. I can probably get 5 knots or better at full throttle in smooth conditions. Wind, current, and chop will all cut that down. At half throttle under trolling conditions, I was able to go about 12 miles on a gallon of gas. It wouldn't be quick, but in a pinch I'm sure the kicker and the sails could get me just about anywhere I needed to go, if the 50 failed.

Aux. Engine for Mac

Post by Tahoe Jack »

Chinook....am interested in what brand/model mount you use on your X. Lots of places we go have no one to respond to Boat US Tow....and, I have an independant streak as well. Seems like the issues in the past were that common mounts don't have enough hinge range to keep it clear when stowed, and deep enough to work when down. On Tahoe, we need a four stroke or super clean two. Looking at these lightweight 2 and 2.5 HP motors. Also, WOW, :) re your railroad trip. hull of an experience. 8) Jack

Sold from WM http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/st ... artial/0/0

Some mods will be needed or just make one. I will need some way to get the motor onboard.

Installation Instructions Edson Outboard Motor Mount

Edsons Bronze Outboard Brackets are designed as an engine. mount for use on dinghies or as a sturdy dinghy engine mounting

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Got no place on your stern rail to put that nice teak motor mount because your stainless has too many curves & angles? Here's an inexpensive solution that may work for you. Measure the distance from the upper rail to the lower rail and purchase a length of stainless tubing (12 inches or so will generally do it) and a PVC Tee with the same ID, inside diameter. Cut the PVC Tee lengthwise so that it will fit around your existing bottom rail. Fit the short length of stainless into the bottom of the teak motor mount and into the top of 1/2 of the tee. Secure the two halves of the tee around the stainless with hose clamps or hefty cable ties and your done. To upgrade from PVC (after you're sure you like it) invest a bit more money and get a stainless tee!
