Our first solo outing with our 26X

Post by Captain Wm Hook »

Yesterday, my wife and I took the new (to us) Mac 26X to Detroit lake in Oregon. We set up and motored until we saw ripples. Locked her in irons, ( the boat, not my wife  ) and raised the sails. We tacked to the log jam by the dam then jibed and sailed up an arm of the lake. where we ate lunch. I was supprise how well she ran with the wind & how well she came about! (Our last sailboat was a Hobie 16'). We heeled her over to 30 degrees at one point.

I got 15.5 knots out of the Honda 50 as I drained the ballast to load her on the trailer. I had a little trouble docking in the side wind. As I got off, a member of this board, Harvey, came and introduced himself and gave us some pointers including the "Mac Bump". What a great guy!

YEAH...me too.

I overnighted on my Mac over the weekend, took her out Fri PM, and Sat. AM. Only one incident occurred when a yacht was intering the Marina as I was leaving. I saw the Captain with his head down (not watching). The closer we came, I knew it was a disaster in the making :!: I hit neutral, then reverse for a few feet and he saw me almost too late :| He made his move & turn "just in time". We both gave great Texas smiles, and waves, and continued on. (I forgot my air horn below and didnt have enough time to give him a toot) A major NO NO ! Otherwise a great time on the water.

My check list add on for me: Put the Air Horn in the cockpit :!:

Louis - A whistle on a lanyard (short) around the neck...

- always works
- doesnt get lost
- can be reached anywhere on boat

Several short blasts signal 'danger' aka "Pay attention you d****a***"

to the powerboater on autopilot while he is watching the game down below..

I have both an air horn and give everyone on a whistle attached to their PFD too....

USeful off season at hockey games and Violin concertos too..
