Frank,

See the 18th edition of my calc post above... 33.8 US liquid ounces in a liter and 1000 milliliters in a liter so X/1000*33.8=Y, where X is amount in milliliters and Y is amount in ounces.

For sanitizing RV freshwater systems (including plumbing), the formula works out to an ounce of liquid household bleach for every 8 gallons of capacity. The minimum contact time for this dilution is 4 hours, but I leave it in overnight. It takes 2-3 flushes to get rid of the chlorine taste.

Hmm... well, I guess one of my concerns is what happens when you *release* all that chlorinated water into the ecosystem? Maybe a little bit of smell is less important than producing a mini-fishkill?

Quite right, kmclemore, which is why I dont take the ham-handed approach and just pour a gallon of the stuff in. My thinking, which may be right or wrong, is that if I use an appropriate amount there will be little if any chlorine left over to be dumped, just salt water which is what is produced by the sodium hydroclorite doing its thing.

The smell is not really a major issue, you hardly smell it when the vent plug is closed, HOWEVER, the admiral is convinced that the ballast tank is a biological weapon capable of taking out New York and has threatened to call the Center for Disease Control.

Now, if anyone can recommend the correct concentration of the correct solution which when administered makes the admiral compliant and agreeable, I would be most grateful. I have already tried vodka 1 million parts per million with unsatisfactory results.

To answer the question re the enviroment....lets put it this way....it is a non-issue.....you will never use enough to do any harm.....and the manner in which chlorine works in a sanitizing situation eliminates enviromental issues.

For any who object to the use of chlorine....and no one has appeared yet....remember chlorine as a sanitizer has probably added 20-30yrs to your life expectancy....it is that important to us.

Now lets discuss Breakpoint

(Known as SHOCKING OR SUPERCHLORINATING; a term for oxidizing everything in the water).

To understand what this means, lets imagine you have to toss a pumpkin over the fence to your neighbour. The breakpoint is the point at which the pumpin clears the fence.....mission accomplished. If it dosn't clear the fence, you have achieved nothing....just used up energy and not achieved your purpose, and you have to repeat the exercise.

By raising chlorine levels ten times the level of chloramines, a threshold is reached called breakpoint chlorination.
When this is reached, something of a shock, or perhaps more akin to a lightning bolt, rips through the water, slashing and burning everything in its path.

Large doses of chlorine, in the way of shocking, are also very effective when algae has turned the water a yellow or green color.

How much chlorine is required to shock?

Generally, we want to raise the chlorine level up to around 10 ppm.

Liquid chlorine can used for superchlorination to reach breakpoint.

Whatever chemical, we must introduce 10 times the potential of the chloramines. For example, if combined chlorine levels are at 1.0 ppm, we need 10 ppm of free chlorine levels to reach breakpoint.

To summarise...if we know we have a problem, first we Superchlorinate or Shock, so we reach or exceed Breakpoint, by adding a minimum of 10ppm free chlorine.
Then we maintain the water with 1ppm free chlorine.

We have establish that 1ppm is b*ggar-all, so in reality, 10ppm is b*ggar-all too.

Now you have to remember I am just a dumb ar*ed farmer, but from all I have read; all questions I have asked; what I actually have to achieve to survive; what standards i have to achieve under my Quality Auusrance HACCAP.....this is how i understand 'chlorine'.

So keep it simple.
Cheers

OK... a different but related question, how does everyone leave their transom valve/vent plug when the boat is out of the water? open/open, open/closed, closed/open or closed/closed? It seems that people have this problem to different degrees and I wonder if this has anything to do with it.

One of my old books said to use one tablespoon of liquid bleach per gallon as a general surface disinfectant and 4 tablespoons per gallon for areas like toilets and diaper pails. That would seem to give a pretty substantial leeway regarding the amounts to use. So for a 140 gallons ballast that would be (140 tblspoons and 4 x 140 = 560 tblspoons and given one gallon is 256 tablespoons) more than 1/2 gallon and less than 2 gallons and screw the metric system. I live in the USA and expect my freedom fries super sized and not measured by any old system developed by the French. If you have use the metric system the terrorists will win something.

what about the tablets that you use for making beer? if they can sterilise beer and wine bottles? from memory they are some type of acid.

or what about attaching a UV sterilisation unit, the type that is used in marine tropical fish tanks, ive never had a smelly tank with one of those and all it would take is to plug it into shore power and run it for a while.wipe out all the organisims and thus no odour

I have looked seriously at UV, and as I understand it, you have to filter out particles, because if the 'bugs' are behind the particle when they pass the UV, they survive.
So i needed 2 things:
1. I had to filter the water well
2. I had to move the water thru a tube with the UV light in that tube.

So without knowing your fish tank, I would guess you are circulating and filtering your water continually, and i would suggest you have a perfectly clear/clean tank and healthy fish. UV is perfect for that situation.

Before anyone raises it, another form of sterilization is Ozone (o3) and there are small units for pools, but they are costly.

Then comes reverse osmosis.....I don't even want to go there.

Because of my size, I get all the 'salesmen' visiting me regularly, trying to peddle their product. The Ozone guy is persistant...his quote of 2mths back is $28,000, and it is no more effective than chlorine.

Chlorine is the cheapest and most cost effective option.

If someone tells me how many gallons (US or Imperial) is in the X and the M, I will try and work out 2 simple charts for you using pool chlorine or household bleach.

What have you got against the French!!!
If it wasn't for those dirty b*astards, your National Anthem would be
"God save our gracious Queen
Long live our Noble Queen
God save our Queen
etc"
Our history tells us those rotten French destroyed the Brit Navy, sneeked into Chesappeake (sp!) and over powered Cornwallis, and gave power to a bunch of srawny-ar*sed misfits, and that the majority of Americans at the time never wanted the Brits 'out' at all.
Then those sneaky French built and gave you a monster or a monument to put at the entrance to your harbour to signify freedom and welcome.

Jezzzzzzzzzzzz, I hate the French
:P :P :P :P :P

Seriously, the metric system is the better system. There is no comparison...maybe one is: like a horse and cart compared to a new 10 ton truck.
Sorry to divert......felt like a bit of fun.

Since my parents were at one point English subjects, I can understand why you might believe your revisionist history lesson. Perhaps it is some divergent response to our putting Paris in jail.....I might suggest nationalistic suppressed latient criminal issues that have not been fully addressed.

And I can see how you would feel that a 2.54 cm scone is longer than 1 inch brownie or 1000 grams of lead weighs more than 2.205 lbs of feathers. But I can assure you that 30 mil of Fosters is not better or bigger than 1 oz of Sam Addams.

Here in the land of freedom - protected by our Patroit Act, where as you pointed out our Lady Liberty stands facing East (not South) and saying- "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."; we are one nation under our God (not some foreign heathen God mind you) who speaks to our leaders (so they do not have to listen to anyone else) and they in turn comfort us in our fear.

Now perhaps you weren't aware the the good book said to shake the dust off your feet - not your meters or spare the rod and spoil the child- not the spare the dekameter. If the Bible said it then so it must be or your not a true American.

So lets put this behind us and sing that Old English drinking tune "To Anacreon in Heaven" you know how it goes - Josea can you see by the coyote's light the fields that you'll pick after you've walked through the night...........

Anyway, I am sure your right and I did so love the Sydney Harbor when I was there.

Phillip,

I have never seen the capacity of the ballast tank anywhere but the weight of the ballast water in the M is supposed to be 1150 lb. which translates to about 140 US gallons or 115 imperial gallons. Not sure about the X.

Most Factory propoganda said 1400 lbs. water ballast for the X-boat.

Means my earlier SWAG (200 g.) was wrong. At 8.33/gal, it should hold 168 gallons.
