IDA RUDDERS

Post by Bawgy »

Just got my new rudders from Ida sailor . A tree fell on one of the old ones and gashed it up pretty bad so I ordered a new set . Hope they live up the good reviews I read about here.

Bawgy,

Let us know what you think. In my opinion they help mainly in very light air and heavy air. It's hard to do an objective comparison because the Admiral and I have gotten better at controlling the boat over time so it's have to completely credit the rudders but I'm glad I have them.

Put the new rudders on this weekend . Will try them out at CLO this weekend . Pretty easy fix. all the holes were in my rudders but the travel lock holes didnt line up . The Rudder would hit the transom before the hole was fully exposed . About ½ the hole showed through the mount when the rudder was raised . I drilled two new holes instead of enlarging the old ones . I did not want the rudders to bounce up and hit the boat when towing

I had the same issue. I think I elongated the holes.

I called idasailor when i discovered the holes didn't quite match, they said drilling them out to fit was ok and didn't cause any integrity issues and that they would look into it, They seemed to think the newer Mac used the same size bolts as the actual bolt that mounts the rudders and that the older ones were just smaller.

My biggest complaint was the alignment of the holes not the size . I would like to have been able to raise the rudders higher to trailer but had to drop them down enough to space new holes away from factory ones

I'm not in the market for M rudders, but I've noticed this on the Kelly-Hanson Marine website:

Ida Sailor performance M rudders $699 / pair

Factory manufactured M rudder $95 each

I know it's apples v. oranges, but huh?....

I didnot pay that much but they are very good rudders. I like the material and they do perform better. I busted mine so I replaced with the beefier rudder . I would not just replace to enhance performance because then where would it stop . Carbon Mast and Boom Detachable remote controlled dinghy with out board to follow around when racing. Carbon Sails . The list would go on

Yes the rudders are better but if you are ok with the Stocks Wait until you need one .

About 6 months ago Idasailor rudders doubled in price, supposedly due to the cost of raw materials. I scored one for my Mac25 for about $260, a week later the price was about double.

The Mac25 idasailor rudder was not drilled at all.

They never put the holes in the right place. Better to get them undrilled and drill your own holes.

Highlander and I got a set each. I had no issues with the holes at all. Just took off the stock ones, attached the IDA set, good to go.

Have been sailing 6 out of the last 7 days, was in a sailing race, logged several hours now.... love them! Much better at keeping my M on her feet. Tries to round up in a puff, with quicker response and more surface area, the IDA set hold her hard against the temptation to round up.

Best money spent on my M to date.

My IDA rudders were just delivered today!! Still not any closer to going splash tho. The Fed Ex delivery guy turned out to be a Mac X owner that I met two years ago when launching mine...small world.
