Do not throw them in any machine. Go to Sears and purchase a carpet cleaning powder called
CAPTURE. There is a spray liquid that is applied to the carpet first, then a white powder is sprinkled on the carpet. You then rub it all into the carpet, and wait for it to dry. You then vacuum it out.
When I was in the furniture service industry, I would subcontract all of my carpet and fabric cleaning jobs to a fellow who was the best I have ever seen at that business. He built all of his own equipment

He highly recommended me to get Capture for my own home for emergencies. Two years ago I needed a few carpets cleaned in my home. Unfortunately, Randy had died a several years earlier, and I never found anyone as good again. I used the good old Yellow Pages, and the fellow who came to my home made a large area of my off white living room carpet beige

. After several attempts over a few days, he gave up and turned it over to his insurance company. I remembered Randy's words, and went out to Sears for some Capture. To make a longer story short, the Capture did in four attempts by me, what the pro could not do at all. Beige Gone!
In all honesty, I have not tried it myself on my Mac's carpets. That is one of my chores to do either Wednesday or Thursday evening. The carpets are off of the boat and waiting, but I do have that much confidence in the stuff to potentially embarrass myself here.
