I use the mitt on mine even when I'm also using the bungy to hold it out of the way, and I leave it on there when trailering to keep the drum clean and free of squashed bugs and things.

I also find a pair of these mitts real handy for the ends of my mast-raising pole
Same here, regarding the car wash mitt as a cover for the CDI furler. Works great. For the ends of the mast-raising pole, I use a pair of thick socks.

Speaking of the mast-raising pole, the Admiral's first improvement project was sewing a bag with a draw-string closure for the pole and its attendant lines & wires. Once everything is slippped into the bag, it is much easier to move about and store [under the seat across from the head]. If the pole is inserted into the bag with the yoke at the drawstring end, it can be bolted in place prior to removing the bag. Then, after the mast has been raised [or lowered], slip the bag back over the pole and stuff all the lines & wires inside before unbolting the yoke. Very neat.
