Just a note to finish this off cleanly. Got the new mast raising system and it's a honey. Real easy to use and install. I am no longer worried about raising and lowering the mast. This is an excellent piece of equipement...worth every penny!

Dug the factory Mast raising tool out today - its great. I never had a problem raising the mast without it - but it was a pain when something got caught or tangled on the way up - and you had to drop it down and sort that out before you started again. Now with the mast raising tool - you can just walk up and sort things out.
I will be making some mods to it - replacing the shackes on the wire baby stays with snap shackles, I made a 3/8" rod with locking pin for the base (quicker than a bolt).
So, while i have tried to avoid adding another bit of gear to the boat, the advantages will outweigh my desire to leave as much stuff at home....

Yep, the mast raising rig makes an unpleasant chore almost enjoyable, provided you don't experience the clutch slip problem ubi_est_via reported. Snap shackles and pins are the way to go too.

Be careful of what you use the snap shackles on. A friend of mine was raising the mast on his X with a mast raising system and the snap shackle came loose. Fortunately the mast was only about 3 feet up when it happened. I think the shackle was worn.Snap shackles and pins are the way to go too.
