Here is a picture of the sliding mechanism on the inside of the hatch http://picasaweb.google.com/Kilblaan/Ma ... directlink ... if it was a SS rod instead of a spring it would make more sense as you could then adjust the amount the hatch is opened ... does anyone know perhaps where a SS rod with holes in each could be purchased?

Re: Hatch latch
The original hatch latch/screw is still working fine, but as others have reported you end up on your back unscrewing it

Re: Hatch latch
Sounds like a previous owners attempt to accomplish what your trying to do.Kilblaan wrote:I'm a new owner of a 2001X ... I've been able to find solutions for all my other queries thru the search and advanced search. .......What is the purpose of this spring and slider?
It is a lot more work than a larger screw but you can drill out the hole, mix up some epoxy, sand and taper the sides so it will grip and fill everything back up, then drill and use the original size screw.Kilblaan wrote:As a related question is there any trick to get a screw to work once the hole is too large vs putting in a larger screw?

Re: Hatch latch
After more poking around and taking srews out and peaking in behind it seems the PO spread some sort of adhesive on the inside of the hole (assume waited till it dried and then put the screw back in) ... would this be one of the 3M adhesives
Back on the forward hatch ... seem when the spring is compressed its rigid enough to keep the hatch open ... still unsure yet of the whole design philosophy

Re: Hatch latch
I've been using one of these for 2 years and have had no problems. Holds the hatch open slightly more than straight up.
