Hey Rich.

Don't you mean hight times 1/2 the base?

I stand corrected, thanks. I have edited the above post to reflect the correct formula.

With the base (Foot) of the triangle being 10' and the verticle side (Luff) being 28', the hypotenuse (Leech, 27') should be longer than the Luff?
The leech should be longer for a right triangle, but the Genoa isn't a right triangle.
There's no dictate that the luff should be shorter than the leech. It is strictly a matter of the sailmakers election.
Wadler's website archives the hull and sail statistics provided directly by Macgregor Yachts, so I don't doubt them.
In this case it's obvious that the sail's angle at the tack (luff to foot) is more acute than the angle at the clew (leech to foot).

Not really.
The 150 Genoa is 50% larger than the working jib.
The 160 Genoa is 60% larger than the working jib.
That makes a 160 Genoa only about 7% larger than the 150 Genoa.

...and the difference between a 150 and 160 in terms of sheeting angle essentially nothing...

Frank,

You left off the part where I said
the following numbers don't seem correct for the Main.
:) I should have noted that the Main is a right angle triangle, and the Genoa isn't.

Sorry Ray ... failure to read completely. I was more focused on the thread's title.
Of course you're correct, those figures for the mainsail seem impossible.
Cannot imagine what's up widdat, except to consider the source ... Macgregor Yachts~! :|
