That small gray aluminum doo hickey strapped to the speaker is an i-pod.
That one holds 500 songs, burnable from your CD's. My eldest has one just like it that holds 1000 songs.
My middle daughters is twice the size but holds an astonishing 30000+ songs! last I knew she had 11K+ and wasnt scratching 30 % on the memory.
Imagine. Never change a cd again. Your entire collection on a shuffle playlist.
As for earphones, for around $16-30 per we have i-pod docks in all of the cars. We also use them for pod casts. Basically books and talk shows recorded on these devices for playback at a time convenient to you. Imagine Art Bell in the daylight, Way less scary!

Re: Stereo Recommendations
Our iPod holds our entire music collection (as do a Mac and PC at home and a Mac and PC at work). That's why we bought it... so we don't need to haul around CDs.
I'd don't think we've ever used it with earphones since we have connections in the house, truck, Airstream and boat that play through speakers.
In fact, I don't recall ever playing it off its battery since we have power for it in all those places.

We use the same Sony boom-box as Scott, along with a 20 gig I-pod that holds about 600+ songs, a few audio books, and lots of photos and videos.
We keep the boom-box below and run it on A/C at the dock, and on batteries or the 300 watt inverter while underway. The I-pod is in the cockpit on deck at the pedestal in a waterproof touch sensitive case, and is connected to a wireless transformer that sends the signal to the boom box below. So there are no cables to run or trip on.
We also use the wireless connected to the Laptop adn boom-box for better sound when watching movies on our 15" screen laptop.
Like Terry, we also find the boom-box in the way sometimes, so long term we would like to install a system, and still use the wireless Ipod.

Here's our's: http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/index.php?view=525.
I didn't want to cut holes for cockpit speakers so I mounted box speakers on the stanchions near the winches. I tend to go with a cheap CD/AM/FM. It's easy to replace and they seem to last anyway since they're inside. The antenna for my XM and AM/FM radio are both inside the boat, near where the stereo is mounted. AM reception isn't the best with this setup.

Re: Stereo Recommendations
I was toying with the idea of getting one of the big i-pods but the only place we use mine is in the cars and on the boat. I don't know what I would do with 3 mos of non repeating music on one device. The 500 songs mine holds will get us through a weekend without hearing the same song twice.
We have over 5K songs in the basement on my work computer, (older dated stuff that the kids seldom grab from) and around 3-4K songs on the ground floor PC. When Nina gets home from college for T-day I suspect that will jump to 8 or 10K after the youngest raids her collection.

Here's my plan for my X:
I've recently noticed a number of DVD/CD/IPOD/AM//FM single DIN units on the market lately. My plan is to replace my aged CD/AM/FM single din (which has been acting up lately anyway) for one of these:

I just hate having wires hanging about, and with this, I can run video to my DC powered LCD tv that I plan to mount above the aft dinette seat.
Anyone see any issues with that?

Re: Stereo Recommendations
Thanks Ray for the pic, I just bought my 2004 Mac 26M on Nov.8, 2008. only thing I've done, so far, is to give it a good wash down and cover for the Winter. I purchased a Jensen Marine Stereo System and I was wondering if the Speakers could be mounted exactly where you have them on your Mac, woo-hoo, my query has been answered thanks to your great photo !!!! I also purchased the optional Jensen wireless remote, it floats , it's waterproof and it doesn't need a direct line to the Stereo System to work, like normal IF's do, it covers an area of 100' from any direction with no direct line...this is GREAT...no more holes to drill , or wires to fish, and I can mount my Stereo System basically anywhere on board and this remote will work it. The only possible drawback,I can think of, is if I'm at a dock/slip/ sailing and another boater within 100' of me has a Jensen Stereo system on board...it will more than likely trip his too, OR worse, another boater also has a Jensen Wireless Remote too....OH NO Charlie Brown.. NAUTICAL REMOTE WARS !!! AVAST MATES, I LOAD the remote with NEW batteries and fire broadside full remote ablaze !!!! Thanks again for the photo of your speaker placement ! Frank L.NiceAft wrote:Four years ago, when I had my stereo installed, I bought a car stereo because I had it mounted in the cabin. I figured that it there, it would get as wet as it would in a car, and I would just operate it via remote control. The speakers though are marine grade. I can hook up an ipod, or play CD's, and the radio. The system works fine for me. The cockpit speakers are used often. You can see in the photograph where I placed them. They are accessible through the mirrors in the 05 M's cabin. Your 03 may have mirrors there also. If you click on the photo to enlarge it, you will see the panel that controls my shore power. To the right of that (out of view) is the stereo. It is well in view from the captains seat while boating. The remote works quite well.
