Kevin is correct - - - his are better - - - but I think the factory cockpit cushions are OK (and they fit). They need to be put away below at night so they don't get waterlogged - - - but they are comfortable and much better than nothing.

Put SOMETHING in the cockpit - - - certainly it can cost less than the $195 or so for the factory stuff.

The M does not need a hump at the helm to see over the bow. The M's helm sits much higher than the X's. The 5'1" Admiral had trouble seeing when we looked at the X. She was quite content with the view from the M.

I've posted my solution before. I replaced the OEM foam with Ethafoam, a low cost closed cell foam used for flotation devices. Spent $60 and all we have to do is flip them over in the morning and they are dry. You can buy it in different softness and in 1/2" increments of thickness 5'x9' or 4'x'8 sheets.'

All cushions in the sun get really hot. We find it is much more comfortable to sit on pieces of high nap carpet on the cushions. The carpet allows air to circulate, keeping buns dry and cool.

The black Sunbrella fabric of which our cushions are made, do not get hotter than warm. At any time of the day, in the most scorching of weather, they can be sat upon without any discomfort. I don't know, they just do not get hot. It has been that way for years now. The fabric is used for outdoor furniture. People have to able to sit on it. Have you ever had the experience of Sunbrella being hot to touch I have a deep jockey red Sunbrella cover for my steering pedestal. It does not get hot either.

I have a full set of the factory gray vinyl cushions, would not have bought them, except a member on this 'site sold them to me for a C-note, and I installed the snaps on the fiberglass. They fit great, and look great, and are for times when I want the boat dressed up, and on dry days, not to be left on in the rain etc.

The closed foam cushions pictured above are the everyday cushions I use most of the time. SIx panels cover the cockpit reasonably, three seats, and three backs, two sets for the two sides, and another set one across the entire back seat. I strapped them together with webbing, using the double-D plastic fittings in between to act as a hinge, which keeps the seat and the back together, but easily folded up or down and stored without removing the straps. The strap tails have the typical snap buckles to fasten the seat backs to the struts of the bimini, and around the Genny blocks, and the mid-stanchions, to keep the cushions in place. Then in places like against the cabin wall, or where extra padding is needed, of course the regular flotation cushions are always nearby. I forgot where I bought the long foam cushions, one of the major marine suppliers, or from a large boating company online. The best thing is they are almost indestructable.

We have the standard MacGregor cushions, with all their acknowledged shortcomings of thin foam and getting waterlogged. I usually unsnap the seat cushions and stand them vertically on the cockpit deck to minimize dew absorption. We did make a nice mod for the X. I call it our booster seat. We made an outer cover of sunbrella, with velcro closure. Inside, we placed 2 panels of 1 1/2 inch rigid foam glued together, along with 3 inches of open cell cushion foam. With the cushy side up it makes a nice booster seat for steering when motoring, and by flipping it over, it's a great cocktail table for those relaxing moments when at anchor. The rigid foam supports plates and glasses nicely.

Our factory cushions get hot so we made a terry cloth bag for them ...Easy to clean works well..

Doing a search revealed that DOW has sold it's ethafoam facilities to Sealed Air, a packaging supplier. So I can't say anything bout' the price.

Personally I like the ripping noise my Admiral's thighs make when she moves around on a hot day.
One of us thinks it's hilarious. It's also knee slapping funny when one of us hits their head
sitting up in the vee berth, for some reason.
