I do the same thing to fill the ballast I just open the vent and slide valve wait for a bit and close them. Level is about 3 inches below the vent as you say. I was told by the dealer to stand on the bow and rock the boat a couple times to help burp out any air.
Putting a 13# anchor on the bow and 5 gallons of water and a tool box under the dinette front seat got rid of that cork feeling and helped stabilize the boat when beating into the wind. Thanks for reminding me about this. I never burped my boat this year and it has not felt quite right going into the wind this year. I'll burp it next time I'm on it. I never did the superfill thing where you motor in reverse with the valves open. Just doesn't seem like something I want to do.
