I made sure the drain hose does not form a P-trap nor loop, and has fall the entire length to the transom exit. I also use the string method, but have its ends tied to form a continuous loop, not loose enough to get into the prop. The knot is too large to pass thru the hole, but then I tied another simple knot in the line halfway, which can be drawn thru the drain to clear out leaf and debris clogs. Just pull on the string one way and the other to clear the drain.

The shape of the well allows it to "pinch" up and out if it freezes.
Although the tapered design of the well does indeed allow the ice to 'pinch up', the real reason for that design is so that the part will pop out of the mold easier during production... if it had perpendicular sides it would not release. Indeed, for just that reason there is no fiberglass part on the boat (or any other molded product) that is designed with a perpendicular sides.

I park my :macx: in a storage yard that has river rock drives so I found the perfect flat rock that now sits over the drain hole. It keeps all the junk out but lets the water drain. The snow does not get into the drain either. Since I found this magic rock I have not had any clogged drain.

My M is parked by the woods and gets leaves, acorns etc in constantly. I used silicone cement to glue a ~ 3 inch diam raised stainless steel strainer over the drain hole. I bought it at a marine repair shop and I believe it is intended for that purpose. It is easy to clean off, and allows water to drain. It shouldnt be a big deal to remove if desired.
