I did a 2 to 1 with a V cleat for ease of raising. On the rudder there is two stainless straps to attach the pulley.

Just another idea

Hi all, Newb here. Just curious on this because I just got hold of a 1970 v22 (pre pop top? or just sans pop top) and it has a kick up rudder. Must be newer rudder? Also wondering if there is supposed to be a shear pin or pins of some sort for the rudder. Mine doesnt but i do see where they could go.

I will start a thread of my boat with some pics soon.

I will also need some help with rigging. New sailor also (have done enough to be dangerous). Trying to peruse the wealth of knowledge here before asking the same question for the millionth time.

Bye for now,

Grady - that looks really nice. I think my gas shock will provide the extra lifting force needed, but the V-cleat looks like a great idea. Thank you!

Rudder is complete and a big success.

Flight tests, I mean sail tests of the new rudder are complete. After scrapping my new, shorter tiller design and using the old tiller, I'm completely pleased with the performance of the new rudder. On Friday, the water in Joe Pool lake was particularly clear - here's a picture of the rudder in the down position:

Last night we were headed back to the ramp with a nice 5 kt breeze no main and just the unfurled 150% jib. I steered toward the the mark and held it with full jib. With the old rudder, the boat would drift off course even with full rudder and the keel down. It was the best time I have had on the boat since purchasing it a few months ago.

Here's another view:

On last thing I did that I'm really pleased with was to move the motor inward one bolt hole (about six inches) toward the center of the boat. With the open area above the rudder the motor can ride closer to the center line. This helps the balance significantly. The pictures were taken on Friday before I moved the motor or replaced the tiller. Sunday night's sail went much better with the changes.

Happy Sailing,

Wow that does look clear for Joe Pool. I do not think I have ever seen it that clear.

I may be able to make it to Joe Pool this Saturday 8/28 Think you could make it? if so what boat ramp do you usually launch at? I use to launch at the state park but no longer have an annual pass.

Grady - I just may be out there Saturday afternoon. I need to test out some modifications I did last night. There are usually a bunch of sailboats that start from the Oasis at about 3:00PM, sail around the corner and put the spinnakers out to come back. I installed a whisker pole for my big jib I'd like to try out.
