Great on the flats and pusshes it on the mountains but have crossed over the Rockies 8 times now, still does 90 kmph on the passes but works hard.

I put my canoe on top of my Malibu or my wife's station wagon!

Sigh... Don't have my Mac or my tow vehicle yet...

But this is good info for when I DO get them!!

I bought it on Ebay & drove to Massachusetts to pick it up 5 years ago. While a Full sized truck it is a bit anemic compared to it's Roided out Diesel Brothers. It's either 180HP W 300# of torque or 190 Horses with 450#'s of torque... probably the first rather than the later

But it does the job better than this:

I brought Bossa Nova home from Smith Mountain Lake, VA to Fort Belvoir, VA with the old trailer - the old, brake-less trailer. ("Why does it go CLUNK when I hit the brakes?") I get about 12 mpg with Bossa Nova on her 2009 dual-axle trailer, compared with about 20 mpg overall - which isn't too bad.

(I got 16.2 mpg on the 4Runner when I hauled my old MacGregor 19, Beija-Flor, out to her new owners in Missouri last year. Probably a combination of the lighter boat and the lesser windage.)

By the way, I started out using a 1999 Subaru Outback (2.5 liter) towing Beija-Flor and it struggled to handle the little Mac 19!

115 kph (71 mph) top speed empty or full due to a governor inside the injector pump, 95-100 kph (59-62 mph) is better on the ears, the motor is as noisy as an old Massey Ferguson tractor.

Air bags in coil springs on rear, 2" lifted suspension and 265/65/17 Michelin LTX-2 at 45 psi for towing. Max tow speed 75 mph--both up and down hill, 40 mph on the passes, big brakes, very stable. 5 speed auto stick and cruise in 5th gear at 2,200 rpm--OD off on any climb. Commander is no longer available after 2010

Handles the Mac 26X at 65 MPH very well. Not bothered by wind, or large trucks. My longest trip with the Mac was about 300 miles and averaged 17 MPG, over relatively flat ground. Best feature of the Jeep? It's paid for.

Towing my former 1991 26S I would get just over 12 MPG. Now with my 2000 I got got between 10-12 on my first trip bringing her home to Moses Lake, WA from where I bought her in Colorado (however - I had a full load with 5 passengers and while in UT and ID I was going up to and just above the posted speed of 75 MPH) There is a noticable difference in the combined effect of higher wind drag and heavier weight.

I just bought 2004"M". I live in AZ and had to retrieve it from Near Portland. I have a 2006 GMC 3500 dually left over from pulling my 5th wheel travel trailer(18,000 pounds). The truck is crew cab and has a Duramax Diesel, 6-speed Allison, and 4WD. Needless to say, it is an overkill as a tow-beast for the Mac.

The trip was about 1350 miles one way. I got just over 17 mpg going up and 13.6 coming back with the boat. I was rolling 70+ mph most of the time and about half of the trip could be considered mountainous. The Mac towed well and I could not feel any sway. However, observation in the mirrors suggested there may have been some small movement at times. I still have to check for proper trailer balance.

The fifth wheel is for sale and after it is gone I plan to sell the truck and look for something a bit smaller to tow the Mac. Most likely a GMC crossover rated at 6000 pounds towing. After this trip I feel confident that such a vehicle will be adequate. At this point, I think the dually is an excellent tow rig - just not what I need for everyday runabout.
